Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Francisco Vaquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). BJ Penn looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Francisco Vaquez!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Stewart Dunkirk and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Vaquez paws at him with a jab and circles away.

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Vaquez looking for a guillotine here but Penn defends easily.
Penn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vaquez swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Vaquez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

and Penn counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Penn.

Penn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vaquez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vaquez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Vaquez is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Penn is surviving well by controlling Vaquez's body position as best he can.
BJ Penn overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Penn stops Vaquez from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.

Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Vaquez defends it well.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Penn wants to take a breather but Vaquez is having none of it.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

and Penn counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Penn changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Vaquez fights it off and pushes away nicely.
