PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Erwin Santan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paul has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Justin Paul acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Erwin Santan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Justin Paul!
The judges for this bout are Taro Takaoka, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paul misses with a double jab.

Santan scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Santan winds up and cracks Paul with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Santan escapes and gets back to his feet.
Paul dips to his left and cracks Santan with an uppercut!
Paul looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
A looping hook to the body misses from Paul. Santan does a little dance to reset his feet.
Santan tries a head kick but it misses.
Paul avoids the head kick by Santan.
Santan slips a jab and a cross from Paul.
Paul looks gassed!
Santan throws a sloppy head kick and Paul moves out of range easily.
Paul scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Santan doesn't seem bothered though.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Paul lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Santan is trying hard to land a takedown here. Paul sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Santan closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Paul to the mat! Paul manages to get full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Paul avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Santan trying to control but Paul is working from the bottom.
Santan has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Erwin Santan just wasn't active enough.
Santan misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Paul cracks a nice hook into Santan's ribs.
Nice takedown defense from Paul. No joy for Santan on that attempt.
Santan throws an overhand right that lands on Paul's shoulder, as Paul tries to avoid the shot.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Santan fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Paul is out of range.
Justin Paul is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Santan takes a swing at Paul's ribcage but misses.
Santan shoots in and drives through. Paul sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Erwin Santan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Santan wants to clinch.
Paul swats away the attempt to clinch by Santan.
Paul feints a jab promting Santan to slip. Paul then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Santan slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Paul throws a good cross that connects.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Paul stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Paul wants it to stay on the feet.

It looks like Erwin Santan has been cut.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A punch lands to the side of Santan 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Santan takes a swing at Paul's ribcage but misses.
Santan tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Santan takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Santan is trying hard to land a takedown here. Paul sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Santan fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Paul avoids it really well and circles away.
Santan shoots in looking for a takedown but Paul manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Santan's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Santan throws a sloppy head kick and Paul moves out of range easily.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Santan.
Paul ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Santan shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Paul pinned against the cage. Paul gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Paul digs a good hook to Santan's body.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Paul throws a left jab followed by a right to the body, Oh Santan colapses and takes a barrage of punches from Paul as he moves to mount! the ref stops the fight and Santan is left battered and dazed whilst Paul and his camp cheer!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:22 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Justin Paul!
A pretty intense looking Justin Paul took the opportunity post-fight to ask for a shot at the title.
