PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Bubble Bob (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Rex (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bob kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Diamonds Aren't Forever - Bring Me the Horizon. Rex comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Burn In My Light kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bubble Bob!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matt Rex!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Donatello Bradman and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rex feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Rex looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Rexis looking to pass into half guard but Bob pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Bob is in guard.
Rex wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Bob manages to pass to side control.
Bob throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Bob scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Bob wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rex keeps working.
Rex wants to control but Bob is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bob slips a nice elbow through Rex's hands, connecting with Rex's forehead.
Bob not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Rex is staying active underneath Bob, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Bob sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Rex defending well though.
Bob winds up and cracks Rex with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Rex tries to get to full guard but Bob has control of the leg.
Rex tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Bob manages to move to mount!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bob connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Bob lands a big shot there that rocks Rex but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Rex takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Bob has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Bob jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Rex manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rex looks to move to half guard but instead Bob has passed into mount! Damn!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rex swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Rex is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Bob can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rex is looking to escape.
Bob working away from the top, dropping strikes.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bob in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Bob misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Bob lands a heavy elbow.
Rex tries to hold on but Bob postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bob trying to control but he's not successful this time.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bob working away from the top, dropping strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bubble Bob dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!



Rex shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Bob's guard.

Bob has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rex can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Rex postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Bob is on top in guard.
Rex looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bob sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Rex's guard.
Bob seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rex does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Rex tries to roll over but Bob keeps him under control.
Bob missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Bob is trying to control the action in half guard but Rex is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Rex is trying to stand up here but Bob is controlling him well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rex trying to hold on to Bob's head to control him but Bob postures up.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Bubble Bob wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Bob dives in and grabs Rex's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rex pushes down on Bob's head and hops out.
Bob shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Rex sprawls well. Rex wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Bob gets slowly back to his feet.
Bob fails with the takedown

and Rex counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bubble Bob. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Bob is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Rex stands and steps away. Bob gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Rex gets a clinch.
Bob tries to pull guard but Rex forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Rex gets control of Bob's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rex will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Rex bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Bob's guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Rex's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Rex is looking to stand up but Bob won't let him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bob pulls Rex in close to prevent any damage.
Rex trying to control the position from guard on top but Bob is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Matt Rex has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Rex feints and as Bob raises his hands in defense, Rex changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Rex showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Some bone on bone action there as Bob checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
A good leg kick by Bob.
The fight stays on the outside here - Bob looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Bob is looking to slow Rex down with leg kicks.

Rex drives through and clinches with Bob against the cage.

Rex is trying to trip Bob. He has hold of a leg but Bob is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Rex persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Bob not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Bob looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rex is one step ahead there.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rex tries to stand but Bob is controlling from the bottom.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rex stuffs the takedown attempt from Bob. Bob gets slowly back to his feet.

Bob tries to sprawl but Rex drives through with a takedown into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bob keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Rex slows the pace down in half guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Rex closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Bob's guard.
Rex trying to control but Bob is working from the bottom.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Matt Rex has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Bob gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Rex to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Rex wants to control from the top but Bob keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rex slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Matt Rex comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Rex has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
