PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Alex Partridge (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thomas Rust (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rust has chosen Marylin Manson - Sweet Dreams as his entrance music. Alex Partridge looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Alex Partridge!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Thomas Rust!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Hirohito Nitta and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rust misses with a low kick.
Partridge is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Partridge fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Rust looks to land a combination but Partridge avoids it well.
Partridge shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rust as he jumps to the side.

Rust fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Partridge sprawls well initially but Rust persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Rust is working for a kimura but Partridge is defending it quite comfortably.
Partridge tries to roll over but Rust keeps him under control.
Rust looks gassed!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Partridge throws his legs up looking for a submission but Rust uses it to pass to side control.

Rust tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Rust wants to lay and pray for a moment but Partridge keeps working.
Partridge is trying to improve his position.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Rust is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Partridge is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Rust tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Partridge is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Rust off and has taken his back!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rust manages to reverse the position and now he's in Partridge's guard. Nice work there by Rust.
Rust must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Rust gets to his feet - Partridge follows without any prompting.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
No joy there for Partridge, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Rust closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Rust works his way into side control.

Partridge shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Rust counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alex Partridge. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Rust wanted to stand there but Partridge had control of the position.

Rust shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Rust goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Partridge turns into him and now he's in Rust's guard.

Rust manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Partridge manages to get himself to full guard.

Partridge is really struggling to control Rust but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Rust drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Rust jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Rust shoots in and bounces Partridge off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Partridge has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Rust is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Partridge.

You can see the frustration on Partridge's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Partridge is looking for a sweep.

Rust has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Partridge misses with a takedown attempt

and Rust counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Rust cracks Partridge with a solid left hand.
Partridge avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Partridge pulls Rust in close to prevent any damage.
Partridge is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Partridge is pressing down on Rust's thigh, looking to free his foot. Rust is holding on for now.

Rust is pressing down on Partridge's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Partridge thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Partridge wants to control from the top but Rust keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Alex Partridge just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Partridge shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rust pinned against the cage. Rust gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Partridge tries for a takedown but Rust sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Thomas Rust showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Partridge has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rust can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Partridge not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Partridge is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rust takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Partridge working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rust doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rust manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Partridge had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Rust is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Partridge Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Rust's back instead.
A lull in the action here.

Rust tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Partridge trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Partridge has hold of Rust's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Rust manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Rust is in all sorts of trouble here.
Rust is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Rust regains half guard.

Partridge is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Alex Partridge.
Well Rust has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
