PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Billy Bob (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Connor McManus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McManus has chosen Jeff Danna - 'The Blood of Cú Chulainn' as his entrance music. Connor McManus told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Billy Bob!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Connor McManus!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Alec Ball and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McManus misses the jab.
McManus changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Bob tries to avoid it but McManus manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Bob to the ground. Bob escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
McManus throws a leg kick but Bob sees it coming and moves out of range.
Bob wants to clinch
and McManus makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Bob forces McManus back against the cage and clinches.

Bob lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Bob tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Bob taking a breather.
Bob stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Bob takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Bob tries a body shot but McManus blocks it.
McManus tries to break the clinch but Bob is controlling the position.

Bob pushes McManus back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Bob keeps the fight in the clinch, despite McManus's efforts to push away.
Bob misses with a short punch on the inside.
McManus tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
McManus lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Bob backwards.

Bob gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Bob wants to pass the guard but McManus is defending well.

Bob thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed McManus's head.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
McManus makes his way to full guard. A much better position for McManus.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Bob accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Bob is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Bob drops back, looking for a kneebar! McManus looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. McManus looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from McManus!
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
McManus in side control, throwing shots but Bob defends.
McManus lands a decent elbow from side control.

McManus fails to land a wild elbow strike.
McManus trying to control the position but Bob is working away.
McManus lands a few punches from side control.
Bob is looking for a sweep.
Bob manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Bob is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and McManus reverses the position - he's now on top in Bob's guard.

That was a close round but I would say that Billy Bob will probably get the nod.

Bob doesn't manage to clinch there - McManus circles away.
Bob tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but McManus swivels and escapes.
McManus misses with a head kick.
Bob displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from McManus.
McManus lands with a straight right. Bob didn't see that one coming.
McManus shoots in looking for a takedown but Bob manages to keep the fight standing, pushing McManus's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Bob tries to clinch but McManus is having none of it.

Bob fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with McManus, pushing him back against the cage.

McManus is fighting off a takedown attempt but Bob is just too persistent for him and manages to trip McManus to the mat. McManus regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Bob has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Bob throws an elbow that misses. McManus uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Bob's guard. Nice move by McManus!

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Bob in particular looking to stall.

McManus tries to work over Bob's front leg with a kick but Bob checks it.

Bob is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because McManus is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
