PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Todd Sweeney (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chong Zhu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Zhu is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Meet Gazoo. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chong Zhu!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Gregory Folan and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A chopping leg kick lands by Zhu.
Sweeney pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Sweeney feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sweeney seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Sweeney takes the fight into the clinch.

Sweeney has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Zhu clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Zhu turns into Sweeney and is now in his guard.
Sweeney utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Zhu accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Zhu passes Sweeney's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Zhu is trying to control the action in half guard but Sweeney is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Zhu enables Sweeney to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Zhu manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Todd Sweeney overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Chong Zhu hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Sweeney blocks a head kick by Zhu.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Zhu fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Sweeney has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Sweeney gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Zhu.
Zhu tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Sweeney manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chong Zhu showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Chong Zhu comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Zhu has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
