The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Heans tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in the close the distance. Sparks manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Sparks shoots in for a takedown but Heans shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Sparks fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Heans wants to clinch.
Sparks just misses with a punch to the body.
Heans doesn't manage to clinch there - Sparks circles away.

Heans lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Heans lands a right hand that snaps the head of Sparks backwards.

Sparks has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Heans after a bit of a struggle.
Sparks avoids a wild elbow strike from Heans.
Heans lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Sparks goes for a takedown attempt but Heans pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Sparks shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Heans keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Sparks shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Heans pinned against the ropes. Heans gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Sparks tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Heans was well out of range. Poor timing from Sparks.

With the fighters up against the ropes, Heans throws an elbow but misses.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Heans is pressed up against the ropes. Sparks has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Heans down to the mat. Heans avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Heans closes the distance and clinches.
Heans lands a hook to the side of the head.

Sparks is looking for a takedown.

Heans manages to pull guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Sparks tries to free his leg and advance position but Heans is retaining full guard.
Sparks prevents Heans from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Sparks is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sparks stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Heans swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sparks tries for a takedown but Heans sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Sparks throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Heans tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sparks is in Heans's guard.
Sparks trying to control the position from guard on top but Heans is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Heans wants to stand and escape but Sparks is having none of it.
Heans knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sparks on the ground.

Sparks thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Sparks is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Heans is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
