PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Carson Wood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Ryan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jon Ryan was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Carson Wood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jon Ryan!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Ren Mimura and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ryan throws a jab when Wood was well out of range.
Ryan swats away the attempt to clinch by Wood.

Ryan gets a clinch.
Wood is trying to break the clinch but Ryan is controlling him.

Ryan has Wood pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Ryan pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Wood tumbling to the mat - Ryan dives into Wood's guard.

Wood bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ryan's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Ryan holds on and takes a little breather.
Ryan working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Wood.
Wood could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Wood postures up in Ryan's guard and throws a big left but Ryan blocks it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wood trying to control the position from guard on top but Ryan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Ryan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Wood sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Ryan's guard.
Ryan is trying to get back to full guard.
Wood tries to pass to full mount but Ryan defends it.
Wood is looking to take a break and control but Ryan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Ryan manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Ryan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Wood, pushing him back against the cage.
Wood is looking to break free of the clinch but Ryan has double underhooks.

Wood is trying to drag Ryan to the mat but Ryan just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ryan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Wood misses with a series of wild punches.
Ryan keeps the fight on the outside.
Wood throws a nice looking combination but Ryan bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Ryan shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Wood as he avoids it easily.
Wood throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Wood misses with a double jab.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Wood slaps away a takedown attempt from Ryan, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Ryan looks gassed!
Wood is looking to clinch but Ryan is avoiding it.
Wood throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Wood lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Ryan circles away quickly and effectively.
Wood tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Ryan counters with a single leg into guard. Wood didn't expect that.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wood looking to control.
Wood is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Ryan is controlling him.
Wood is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Ryan postures up.
Ryan trying to control the position from guard on top but Wood is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Ryan might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Wood kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jon Ryan wasn't active enough on the ground.
Ryan keeps the fight on the outside.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wood closes the distance looking to clinch
and Ryan counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Wood is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Wood fails with an attempt to clinch.
Wood shoots in for a takedown but Ryan shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Ryan takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Ryan has closed the distance and engaged Wood in a clinch.
Ryan is struggling to control the position.

Ryan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ryan keeps the fight on the outside.
Wood tries to clinch up but Ryan circles away and keeps his distance.

so Ryan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jon Ryan will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Jon Ryan has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Wood throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Wood misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Ryan takes one to the side of the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ryan fails with the takedown.
Ryan is breathing heavily.

Ryan feints and as Wood raises his hands in defense, Ryan changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Ryan stops Wood from standing up.

Wood has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Ryan should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Wood has tightened it up now! Ryan should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:43 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Carson Wood!
