PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jason Segel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Frank James is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jason Segel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Frank James!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Mauricio Rocha and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Segel misses with a few strikes there.
A decent looking cross lands there for James.
Segel throws a series of strikes that have James backpedaling.
James is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Segel.
James misses with a straight right.

Segel scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Segel drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Segel jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

James had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Segel is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. James Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Segel's back instead.
Segel tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Segel bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Segel is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but James is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Segel is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Segel manages to reverse the position and now he's in James's guard. Nice work there by Segel.

That was a close round but I would say that Jason Segel will probably get the nod.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Segel shoots in but no luck this time.

James drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

James drops back, looking for a kneebar! Segel looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Segel looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Segel!

Segel tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Segel has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jason Segel.
Well Segel has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
