PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Karl Spatz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Slim Calhoun (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Calhoun has chosen Always Strapped by: Lil Wayne as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.

The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Anni Minnemäki and Matti Vanhoillinen.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spatz lands a front kick.

Calhoun closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Calhoun creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Spatz sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Calhoun throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Spatz wants to get back to his feet.
Calhoun working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Calhoun working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Spatz is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Calhoun has just dragged him back down to the mat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Calhoun wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Spatz, who protects the arm well.

Calhoun stands up and beckons Spatz to his feet.
Calhoun shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Spatz sprawls well. Spatz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Calhoun gets slowly back to his feet.

Calhoun tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Spatz paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Calhoun is working to avoid the ground and pound but Spatz connects with a decent elbow.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Spatz lands a decent elbow from side control.
Calhoun is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Spatz's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Spatz looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Calhoun with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Spatz gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Spatz avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Calhoun shoots in looking for a takedown. Spatz tries to sprawl out of it but Calhoun keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Spatz manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Spatz lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Calhoun is rocked!

Spatz dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
A head kick misses from Calhoun.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Spatz throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Calhoun stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Spatz scores with a head kick. Calhoun tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Calhoun is still on wobbly legs! Can Spatz finish him?
Spatz fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Calhoun.
Calhoun takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Calhoun tries to keep at a distance but Spatz has taken the fight into the clinch.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Spatz is trying to stall.
Calhoun tries for a takedown. No joy.
Calhoun jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Spatz walks away with a smile on his face. Calhoun gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Sloppy strikes from Spatz. Those never looked like landing.
Calhoun on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Spatz. Spatz obviously looking to wear him down.
No luck for Calhoun with that takedown attempt.
Calhoun seems to have recovered his senses.

Spatz lands on the inside with an uppercut.

Spatz is leaning against Calhoun and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.

Spatz lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Calhoun backwards.
Calhoun is trying to pull guard but Spatz turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Spatz manages to break the clinch.
Spatz lands with a shot to the body.
Spatz tests Calhoun's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Calhoun takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.

Spatz moves into range and clinches up with Calhoun.

Spatz pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Karl Spatz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
