PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between CJ Richards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonathan Shift (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Richards comes into the arena with Notorious B.I.G - Respect blaring out of the sound system. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, CJ Richards!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jonathan Shift!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Richards misses with a looping left.
Shift keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Richards.
Shift uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Richards.
Shift steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Richards.
Shift tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Shift changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Richards tries to avoid it but Shift manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Richards to the ground. Richards escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Richards swats away the attempt to clinch by Shift.
Richards misses the shot to the body.
The fight stays on the outside here - Shift looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Richards misses with a series of wild punches.
Richards throws a right hand that Shift ducks under and follows up with a left that Shift also avoids with ease.
Shift tries to clinch but Richards is having none of it.

CJ Richards has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonathan Shift.
Shift tries to pull guard but Richards holds him up against the cage and eventually Shift drops back down to his feet.
Shift wants to break the clinch but can't.

Shift's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Richards throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Shift.

Richards jabs Shift to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Shift tries to clinch there but Richards circles away.

Richards uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Richards throws a combination that misses
and Shift counters with a solid body kick.
No joy there for Richards, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Shift showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Richards.
Richards lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Shift pushes Richards up against the cage in a clinch.
Shift unloads a knee to the mid-section. Richards lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Shift has Richards pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Richards manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Shift breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Richards misses with an uppercut.
Richards circles away from the clinch attempt.
Richards misses with a double jab.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Richards takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Richards wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Shift tries to clinch there but Richards circles away.
Shift is looking to clinch but Richards is avoiding it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that CJ Richards will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Richards throws a right and a left that Shift avoids nicely.
Shift tries to close the distance and clinch but Richards swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Shift avoids a punch combination nicely.
CJ Richards is winning the standup battle so far.
Richards connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.


It looks like Jonathan Shift has been cut.
Shift doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Richards counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Richards cracks Shift with a big right hand and Shift goes down!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Richards wants to get up but he can't break Shift's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shift looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Richards puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Richards seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Richards stands up out of the half guard.
Shift is breathing heavily.

Richards cracks Shift with a big right hand and Shift goes down!


Shift is rocked!

Richards decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Shift is still on wobbly legs! Can Richards finish him?
Richards dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Shift seems to have recovered his senses.
CJ Richards is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Richards lands with a shot to the body.
Richards throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Richards lands with a jab that stuns his opponent. Shift is looking to close the distance but Richards sees it coming and throws a beautiful knee! Shift crumbles to the mat and that's all she wrote! Let's hope Shift is OK because that was naaaaaasty!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:28 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Knee). CJ Richards!
