PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bailey Vaughan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick Lidell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bailey Vaughan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Nick Lidell!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lidell throws a sloppy head kick and Vaughan moves out of range easily.
Lidell should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Lidell chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Vaughan can pounce on him.
Vaughan really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Vaughan closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Lidell's guard.

Lidell has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vaughan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Vaughan is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Lidell had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Vaughan defends it easily.
Vaughan trying to control the position from guard on top but Lidell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Lidell throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Vaughan throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Vaughan is looking to work some ground and pound but Lidell has wrist control.
Lidell avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Lidell manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Vaughan holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Lidell tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

Vaughan is working to get back to half guard.
Lidell can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Vaughan is looking to escape.
Lidell won't let Vaughan get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

Lidell connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Lidell trying to control but Vaughan is having none of it.
Vaughan is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Lidell lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Vaughan hang on?
Lidell pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Lidell wants to finish this one by submission but Vaughan is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Lidell.
Vaughan regains half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Lidell tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Nick Lidell will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Vaughan fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Lidell misses with an attempted mid kick.
Bailey Vaughan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Vaughan drives through with a takedown into guard.

Lidell is working an open guard so Vaughan takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Vaughan defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Lidell.
Vaughan fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Lidell tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Vaughan was well out of range. Poor timing from Lidell.
Horrible takedown by Lidell or perhaps it was just good defense by Vaughan which made him look bad.
Bailey Vaughan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nick Lidell.
Lidell shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Vaughan but Vaughan pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Lidell avoids the head kick by Vaughan.
Lidell looks for the body kick but Vaughan saw that one coming.
Vaughan fails with a takedown attempt.

Vaughan pushes Lidell up against the cage in a clinch.

Lidell has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Vaughan is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Lidell has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Lidell shoots in and drives through. Vaughan sprawls well.

Lidell gets caught flat footed, as Vaughan shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Vaughan stands up and waves to Lidell to follow him.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Vaughan lands with a left to the head.
Lidell fails to pull guard.
Lidell is trying to stall.
Vaughan scores with a shoulder strike.

Vaughan decides to pull guard.
Lidell has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Vaughan tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Vaughan can't keep his opponent in guard - Lidell advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Vaughan is refusing to be controlled, as Lidell sits in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vaughan wants to control but Lidell is keeping busy.
Vaughan avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Lidell.
Vaughan is not content to let Lidell control the position.

Vaughan has one foot on Lidell's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

It looks like Nick Lidell has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Lidell tries to pull guard but Vaughan holds him up against the cage and eventually Lidell drops back down to his feet.
Lidell is looking to take this one to the mat.
Lidell tries for a takedown but Vaughan manages to get underhooks.

Vaughan lands a body shot in the clinch.

Vaughan looking to hit a scissor sweep but Lidell is one step ahead there.
Bailey Vaughan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That's time! Vaughan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Vaughan fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Vaughan doesn't manage to clinch there - Lidell circles away.
Vaughan throws a series of punches but Lidell avoids them all with ease.
Lidell shoots for a takedown but Vaughan saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Vaughan creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Lidell sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Vaughan has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

No joy there for Vaughan, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Vaughan stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Vaughan wants it to stay on the feet.
Bailey Vaughan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nick Lidell.
Lidell takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Vaughan is looking to clinch.

Vaughan avoids the elbow strike from Lidell, against the cage.

Lidell lands a takedown into guard.
Vaughan looking for a sweep. Not yet Vaughan, not yet.

Vaughan has his feet on Lidell's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Bailey Vaughan is winning the standup battle so far.
Vaughan shoots in looking for a takedown. Lidell tries to sprawl out of it but Vaughan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lidell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Vaughan takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Lidell tries to score a power double leg takedown but Vaughan sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Lidell somewhat.

Vaughan lands a nice uppercut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
A frustrated look appears on Lidell's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Vaughan lands a body shot in the clinch.

Vaughan jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Lidell walks away with a smile on his face. Vaughan gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Lidell misses with an uppercut. Vaughan saw that one coming.
Vaughan moves in looking to clinch but Lidell pushes him off.
Lidell tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Vaughan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lidell as he jumps to the side.
Vaughan shoots in but Lidell avoids the takedown attempt easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lidell takes the fight into the clinch.

Lidell jumps guard.

Lidell working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Vaughan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Vaughan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Vaughan has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Lidell is proving hard to escape from.
Lidell wants to get back to his feet but Vaughan is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Vaughan will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Lidell is on top in guard.

Vaughan is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Vaughan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well Vaughan has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
