PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Velcrow Mercades (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andre Rector (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mercades's entrance music is The Baddest- Krispy Kreme. A fine choice. The key to victory for Velcrow Mercades has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Velcrow Mercades!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Andre Rector!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mercades with a poor takedown

and Rector counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Rector looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Rector stands up from Mercades's guard - Rector perhaps looking for a knockout.
Mercades tries to work over Rector's front leg with a kick but Rector checks it.
Mercades shoots in but Rector avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Rector checks a leg kick.
Mercades tries to clinch

and Rector counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Mercades's guard now.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rector trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Rector must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Rector slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Andre Rector hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Rector drives through with a takedown into Mercades's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Rector stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mercades swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rector sitting in guard, not really doing much.

It looks like Rector might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Let's hope that Rector has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Mercades really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Andre Rector hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Rector fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mercades sprawls well initially but Rector persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Rector content to control rather than advance.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Rector not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Well, if Rector is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Andre Rector was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Rector circles away from the clinch attempt.
Mercades tries to clinch but Rector moves out of range.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mercades tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Rector manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Mercades throws a sloppy head kick and Rector moves out of range easily.
Mercades has his takedown stuffed

and Rector counters with a single leg into guard. Mercades didn't expect that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Velcrow Mercades. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rector trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Rector is stalling in the full guard.
Rector pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mercades is keeping the position for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rector is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Rector pushes Mercades up against the cage in a clinch.

Rector works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Rector passes Mercades's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Rector not doing much here.
Andre Rector has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mercades wants to get back to full guard.
Rector is taking a breather. Mercades says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Andre Rector wasn't active enough on the ground.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Mercades!
Mercades fails in his attempt to clinch.

Rector clinches with his opponent.
A short uppercut from Rector.
Mercades is trying to break the clinch but Rector has him pressed against the cage.
A right hand to the body from Rector.
Mercades has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Rector avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Rector tries to score a body lock takedown but Mercades shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Rector decides to pull guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mercades trying to stand up but can't free himself from Rector's guard.

Rector has his feet on Mercades's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Rector tries to sprawl but Mercades drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Rector tries to get to full guard but Mercades has control of the leg.
Rector looks like he's trying to stand up.
Mercades looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rector with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Rector is trying to stand.
Rector wants to control but Mercades is keeping busy.
Rector tries to kick Mercades off but Mercades keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Rector is breathing heavily.

It looks like Mercades is going to stand back up.
Rector is looking for a sweep. Mercades is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Rector is trying to stand up here but Mercades is controlling him well.
Mercades working Rector over with strikes.
Nice strikes from Mercades there.
Mercades frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Rector keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Mercades cracks Rector with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Mercades working for a submission but Rector is keeping him at bay.

Mercades has control of Rector's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Rector regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Rector working to try and regain half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rector holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Mercades tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rector tries to reverse the position but Mercades maintains control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Andre Rector will probably get the nod - 10:9.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Rector stuffs the takedown.
Mercades tries for a takedown but Rector sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Mercades gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Rector slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Andre Rector hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Rector has Mercades up against the cage in a clinch.
Mercades is trying to force a seperation but Rector has the dominant position.
Rector tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Mercades's elbow.
Mercades has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Rector. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Rector successfully pulls guard.
Rector tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Rector keeping moving, preventing Mercades from controlling successfully.

Mercades wants to stand but Rector has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Rector is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Mercades is controlling him.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Velcrow Mercades wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Mercades!
Velcrow Mercades has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Rector changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Mercades looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The referee asks Rector politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Rector prefers to stall for the moment though.

Mercades being controlled for a moment.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Andre Rector hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Rector manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mercades on his heels. He'll look to pass Mercades's guard now, I'm sure.
Rector takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Rector not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Andre Rector is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Rector wants to pass the guard but Mercades is keeping the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Andre Rector.

Rector shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mercades napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Mercades is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!

I've got Rector winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
