PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Cody Elkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Riley Kerestes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cody Elkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Riley Kerestes!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Gwen Towbar and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Elkins closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Elkins thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Kerestes is looking to reverse the position.
Kerestes wants to control but Elkins postures up.
Kerestes being controlled for a moment.
An elbow from Elkins crashes against the mat.
Kerestes is trying to control Elkins's posture but Elkins avoids it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Elkins wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kerestes keeps working.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Elkins looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Kerestes!
Elkins thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Kerestes wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Elkins.

Elkins moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Kerestes has worked his arm free - good work by Kerestes!

Elkins thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Elkins passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Kerestes!
Kerestes is looking to improve his position but Elkins isn't that keen on the idea.
Kerestes wants to get back to his feet.

Elkins goes for an armbar but Kerestes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Kerestes.

Elkins throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Kerestes wants to control from the top but Elkins keeps moving.

Elkins has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kerestes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Kerestes gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kerestes swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Kerestes jabs at Elkins's body.
Kerestes throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Elkins sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Elkins throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Riley Kerestes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A shot to de liver by Elkins. Beautiful body shot.
Elkins uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Kerestes.
Kerestes misses with a straight left.

Elkins drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Elkins is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Elkins throwing strikes but Kerestes manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Elkins wants to control but Kerestes postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Elkins shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kerestes's guard.

Elkins looks up at the clock and then as Kerestes takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Elkins smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Elkins tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Elkins misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Kerestes wants to control but Elkins postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Elkins scores a takedown into full mount!

Elkins goes for an armbar but Kerestes turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Kerestes.

Kerestes wants to stand and escape but instead Elkins has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kerestes slow jab from Elkins misses its intended target.
Kerestes avoids a punch combination nicely.

Elkins looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Elkins is looking to advance position but Kerestes has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Kerestes looking to control but Elkins is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Elkins is working to get back to half guard.
Elkins is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Kerestes throws a one two combo.
Kerestes takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Elkins tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kerestes swivels and escapes.
Elkins fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Elkins looks for a takedown but Kerestes sprawls well.
Elkins shoots for a takedown but Kerestes saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cody Elkins. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Elkins stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Kerestes.
Kerestes lands a two punch combo.

Elkins feints and as Kerestes raises his hands in defense, Elkins changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Elkins postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Elkins is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Elkins looking to sit in guard and control but Kerestes gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Elkins wants to sweep here but Kerestes controlling him for the moment.
Kerestes trying to control but Elkins is working from the bottom.
Elkins is pulling down on Kerestes's head. It's preventing any offense from Kerestes, at least for the moment.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kerestes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Elkins looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Elkins is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Kerestes wanted to stand there but Elkins had control of the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Elkins sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Elkins lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Elkins tries for a takedown but Kerestes sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Kerestes misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Kerestes gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Elkins with a nice head shot there.
Kerestes avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Elkins controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Elkins looking to pass the guard.
Elkins working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Riley Kerestes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Elkins makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Elkins has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Elkins passes into half guard.

Elkins wants to work for an arm triangle but Kerestes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Elkins is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kerestes is just riding it out for now. Elkins eventually gives up the hold.

Well Elkins has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
