PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jeff Wood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bruno Mahinahon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jeff Wood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bruno Mahinahon!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Chris Saunders and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mahinahon lands a slapping body shot.

Mahinahon shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Wood tries to lock up and control but Mahinahon gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Wood is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Wood is wriggling around trying to escape.

Mahinahon goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Wood turns into him and now he's in Mahinahon's guard.
Mahinahon controlling Wood's posture.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Wood accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wood trying to control the position from guard on top but Mahinahon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Wood pushing down on Mahinahon's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Mahinahon trying to control from the bottom.
Mahinahon wants to improve his position but Wood is controlling well.
Mahinahon gets full guard.
Mahinahon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Wood has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mahinahon is adopting a defensive guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mahinahon wants to sweep but no luck.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mahinahon looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Wood passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Mahinahon looks gassed!

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Wood wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mahinahon, who protects the arm well.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Mahinahon parries the strikes from Wood easily there. Wood is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Mahinahon to escape.
Wood is looking to take a break and control but Mahinahon is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Wood fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Wood is trying to ground and pound but Mahinahon uses the momentary lack of control by Wood to regain half guard.
Wood sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Mahinahon defending well though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wood wants to stand but Mahinahon has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Wood thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Mahinahon's head.
Mahinahon is staying active underneath Wood, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Mahinahon is looking for a sweep. Wood is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Wood lands a nice short elbow.
Mahinahon avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Wood.
Wood works his foot free and advances to mount.
Wood punching from mount but Mahinahon doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Mahinahon tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Wood thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Wood prevents Mahinahon from getting the reversal.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Wood is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Mahinahon to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Mahinahon shrugs it off.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Mahinahon is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Wood throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Wood wants to control the pace but Mahinahon is squirming around nicely.
Wood thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Mahinahon has given up his back here. Will Wood look for the submission or keep pounding away?

Wood has the hooks in and he's looking for a rear naked choke here. Mahinahon is defending well but eventually Wood manages to get an arm under the chin and he's locked on the RNC! Mahinahon has no choice but to tap now! He does! This one is all over!
