Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joe Dirt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chael Sonnen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chael Sonnen has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joe Dirt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Chael Sonnen!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sonnen shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Sonnen showed some decent athleticism there.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Dirt makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Dirt.
Sonnen throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Sonnen wants to control from the top but Dirt keeps moving.

Sonnen postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Chael Sonnen has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Sonnen shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Dirt as he jumps to the side.

Sonnen is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Dirt's half guard.

Sonnen seems to be looking for submissions.

Sonnen is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Dirt fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Sonnen to the ground. Dirt is now in Sonnen's guard.

Dirt is pressing down on Sonnen's thigh, looking to free his foot. Sonnen is holding on for now.

Dirt is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Sonnen defends it well.

Dirt throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Sonnen was covering up waiting for the punch and Dirt finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Sonnen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Dirt's guard.
Sonnen would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Sonnen must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sonnen has gone for a leg lock! Dirt slips out almost immediately though and dives into Sonnen's guard.

Dirt is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Chael Sonnen hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Dirt shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Dirt was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Dirt is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Sonnen has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Dirt with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Sonnen tries to hold on but Dirt postures up.

Sonnen is controlling an arm, preventing Dirt from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Sonnen is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Dirt can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sonnen is looking to escape.

Sonnen tries to lock up and control but Dirt gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Dirt has hold of Sonnen's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Sonnen manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Dirt moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Sonnen has worked his arm free - good work by Sonnen!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That was a close second round but I would say that Joe Dirt will probably get the nod.

Sonnen shoots for a takedown but Dirt saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Joe Dirt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chael Sonnen.

Dirt passes the guard and advances to mount!

Dirt has control of Sonnen's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Sonnen regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Dirt is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Sonnen can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Sonnen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Dirt. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Dirt takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.
