PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Robin Padilla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ron James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Robin Padilla!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ron James!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Chad Campbell and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Padilla throws a body kick despite being completely out of range
and James counters with a straight right hand.
James will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

James gets a double leg takedown into Padilla's guard.
Padilla looking to hit a scissor sweep but James is one step ahead there.
James looking to sit in guard and control but Padilla gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
James manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Padilla manages to get himself to full guard.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Ron James wasn't active enough on the ground.
James fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
James buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
James throws a push kick but Padilla slaps the foot to one side.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Padilla enables James to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Padilla manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Padilla is on top in guard.
James wants to sweep here but Padilla controlling him for the moment.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
James looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
James pulls Padilla in close to prevent any damage.

Padilla won't allow James to sweep him here.

James looking for subs off his back but Padilla has passed one foot through into half guard.
James wants to get back to full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

James is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Padilla pulls his head out easily.
James is looking to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ron James dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


James shoots in for a double leg but Padilla sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
A shot to the body from Padilla misses
and James connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
James moves out of range as Padilla throws a body kick.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Padilla lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and James has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from James and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Padilla swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Padilla connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
James connects with a solid leg kick.
Padilla misses with a body shot.
Padilla lands a nice leg kick that just misses James's sensitive parts.
Padilla thows a body shot but no joy.

Padilla jabbing away but nothing is landing.
James chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Padilla can pounce on him.

James on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

enabling James to counter with a crisp jab.
James lands a front kick.

Padilla throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Padilla tries to land a front kick but James steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Padilla looks to score with a jab to the body but James is just out of range.
Padilla lands a head kick!
Padilla is looking to wear down James with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
A looping hook to the body misses from Padilla. James does a little dance to reset his feet.
Robin Padilla is winning the standup battle so far.
James checks the leg kick nicely there.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as James checks a leg kick.
James takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Padilla throws a lazy right hand but James sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Padilla.
James checks a leg kick.
Padilla keeps James at a distance using the push kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Padilla feints and then cracks James's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow James down.
Robin Padilla seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A low kick from Padilla is predictable there
and James counters with a leg kick.
James throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Padilla sees it coming and avoids it easily.
James avoids the head kick by Padilla.
A punch combination from James misses.
Padilla avoids a kick to the body.
James uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Padilla.
Padilla connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

and James counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Padilla's guard now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Padilla has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but James has passed into side control.
Padilla is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Padilla takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

James looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Padilla might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Padilla parries the strikes from James easily there. James is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Padilla to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Robin Padilla will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Padilla ducks down and throws a hook to the body but James moves away.

Padilla thuds his right hand into James's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
James has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Padilla.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

James throws a big right hand that misses.
James is pushing down on Padilla's leg trying to pass to half guard. Padilla is fighting to maintain full guard but James has managed to sneak the leg through.

James seems to be working for a kimura but Padilla defends the submission attempt.

James thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Padilla's head.
James is nestled in close to Padilla, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
James is keen to just control but Padilla is a slippery customer.

Padilla is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
James throws a strike but Padilla avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Padilla knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for James on the ground.
James works a leg free and moves into half guard.
James with the ground and pound but Padilla uses the opportunity to regain guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
James in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

James throws a big right hand that misses.
James working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Padilla's head.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Padilla not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ron James comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think James has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
