PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Denis Opal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 0, fighting out of London, Denis Opal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 37 - 0, fighting out of London, Paul Thomas!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Ackerman and Phil Schofield.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Opal is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Opal wants to clinch.
Thomas throws a right hand that Opal ducks under and follows up with a left that Opal also avoids with ease.
Thomas throws a nice head kick!
Horrible takedown by Opal or perhaps it was just good defense by Thomas which made him look bad.

Opal throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Thomas was covering up waiting for the punch and Opal finishes the takedown easily into guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Thomas looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Thomas kicks Opal off and gets to his feet.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Thomas has managed to clinch.
Opal landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Thomas misses with a short punch on the inside.
Thomas manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Thomas is trying to pull guard but Opal turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Opal's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Opal trying to control but Thomas is working from the bottom.

Thomas managing to control the position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Denis Opal has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Opal throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

Thomas fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Opal to the ground. Thomas is now in Opal's guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Opal seems keen to control Thomas's posture.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Opal has momentary wrist control but Thomas slips an elbow through the middle.
Opal utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Opal avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Opal is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Paul Thomas will probably get the nod.

Opal tries to keep at a distance but Thomas has taken the fight into the clinch.
Opal keeps control of Thomas as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Opal escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Opal takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Opal gets tackled into the cage by Thomas. Thomas maintains the clinch.

Thomas tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Thomas lands a hook that snaps the head of Opal backwards.
Thomas has a couple of punches blocked by Opal.
Opal is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Thomas is keeping busy.

Opal looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Thomas keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Opal's efforts to push away.

Opal tries to close the distance and clinch but Thomas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Thomas lands a jab-cross combination.
Opal misses with a few strikes there.

Thomas changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Opal looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Opal misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Thomas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
No joy there for Thomas, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Paul Thomas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thomas avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Opal drives through with a takedown into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Thomas is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Paul Thomas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Opal's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Thomas works over Opal's head and body with a nice combination.
Thomas shoots in looking for a takedown. Opal tries to sprawl out of it but Thomas keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Opal manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Thomas stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Thomas scores with a hook to the body. Opal takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Opal tries to clinch but Thomas is having none of it.
Thomas is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Paul Thomas seems to be getting the better of the standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Denis Opal.

We're going to have a standup here because Denis Opal wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Opal closes this distance looking for a takedown but Thomas circles away.
Paul Thomas is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

and Opal connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Thomas feints and as Opal raises his hands in defense, Thomas changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Thomas is working Opal over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Denis Opal has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Paul Thomas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Thomas has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
