PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jim Jom (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Damien OQuinn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Jim Jom has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jim Jom!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Damien OQuinn!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Roger Salmon and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
OQuinn looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Jom is fending him off so far but OQuinn persists. Nope, Jom circles away and we're back to standing.
Jom swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Jom scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

OQuinn drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Jom is letting OQuinn control him for a moment.
You can see the frustration on Jom's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
OQuinn slows the pace down.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jom is trying to get back to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
OQuinn taking a breather here.
OQuinn's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Jom tries to buck OQuinn off but OQuinn is having none of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Damien OQuinn.
Jom slaps away a takedown attempt from OQuinn, before circling back to the center of the mat.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jom will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
OQuinn takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Jom misses with a low kick.
Jom bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Jom connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
A punch combination from Jom misses.

Jom stuns OQuinn with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
OQuinn takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Jom throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck OQuinn on the side of the head.
OQuinn fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Jim Jom has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damien OQuinn.
Nice shot by Jom.
No luck for OQuinn with that takedown attempt.

No luck with that takedown attempt from OQuinn.
Jom thuds his right hand into OQuinn's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Jom lands a nice shot to the body.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
OQuinn takes a shot to the body in his stride.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Jom catches OQuinn with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jom scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.

OQuinn fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Jom sprawls well initially but OQuinn persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Jom is looking for a sweep. OQuinn is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
OQuinn is thwarting Jom's attempts to control the position.
OQuinn seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
OQuinn looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
OQuinn is taking a breather. Jom says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Let's hope that OQuinn has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Damien OQuinn.

OQuinn closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Jom did well to prevent OQuinn getting side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
OQuinn is controlling the pace.
Jom is trying to stand.
OQuinn seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Damien OQuinn.
Jom swinging wildly here.
Jom doesn't succeed with the takedown

and OQuinn counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
This has been an exciting period of action!
OQuinn controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jom will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Damien OQuinn has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Good exchange - Jom coming out on top.
Jom stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jom wants it to stay on the feet.

A nice combination there by Jom.
Jom keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Jom connects with the punch.
OQuinn shoots in for a takedown but Jom shows good takedown defense.
Jim Jom has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damien OQuinn.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
OQuinn is trying hard to land a takedown here. Jom sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Damien OQuinn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


OQuinn shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Jom pinned against the cage. Jom gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Jom lands with a shot to the body.
OQuinn changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jom tries to avoid it but OQuinn manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jom to the ground. Jom escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Jom moves into range and connects with a jab.
OQuinn throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Jom's waist but Jom gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing OQuinn off to one side.
Jim Jom has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Damien OQuinn.

OQuinn checks a leg kick.
Jom misses with a two punch combination.
OQuinn shoots in but no luck this time.
Jom digs a good body shot into OQuinn's ribs.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Jom displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.
OQuinn with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Jom to score with a decent uppercut.
Jom is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
OQuinn fails to land the takedown.

Jom jabs OQuinn to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Jom scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
OQuinn throws an off balance right hand
and Jom counters with a one-two to the body.
Jom dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Jom lands with a nice body punch.

OQuinn shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jom is trying to defend but OQuinn finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Jom really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

OQuinn is controlling the pace.
Jom has his hands clasped together around OQuinn's back. He's all about the action.
Jom looks like he's trying to stand up.
OQuinn is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Damien OQuinn wasn't active enough on the ground.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from OQuinn is defended easily by Jom.
Nice sprawl there from Jom as OQuinn shoots in.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
OQuinn shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Jom sprawls well. Jom wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. OQuinn gets slowly back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jim Jom showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Jom has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
