The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Billy shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. Smith gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Billy closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth.

Smith bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Billy's guard.

Billy is trying to maintain the position but Smith is very close to passing his half guard.

Smith is looking to take a break and control but Billy is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Billy is looking to control Smith's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Billy avoid being mounted?
Billy is staying active underneath Smith, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Billy wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Smith manages to pass to side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Billy wants to get back to full guard but Smith has mounted him!

Smith can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Billy is looking to escape.

Smith is landing with some decent strikes but Billy is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Billy tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Billy knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smith on the ground.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
