PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Boom Pow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Powell Locks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pow kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Boom Boom Pow. Powell Locks told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Boom Pow!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Powell Locks!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Nard Betker and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Locks shoots in but Pow avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Locks tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pow swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Pow misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Locks.
Locks walks into a straight right hand from Pow.
Locks shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Pow as he avoids it easily.

Pow has managed to clinch.
Locks has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Locks gets underhooks to prevent Pow's takedown attempt.

Pow has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Locks clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Pow keeps control of the position as Locks tries to break free.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Locks tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Pow is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Pow in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Pow landing strikes, looking to finish!
Pow blocks Locks's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Locks can't escape the position.
Pow looking to control but Locks is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Pow jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Locks is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Locks and Pow has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Locks wants to control but Pow postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pow wants to control but Locks is keeping him busy.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Pow looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Locks can't do much from the bottom here.
Pow trying to control the position but Locks is working away.
Locks manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Locks is staying active underneath Pow, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Pow is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Locks sees it coming and defends easily.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Pow is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Locks is just riding it out for now. Pow eventually gives up the hold.
Pow is breathing heavily.
Locks is trying to maintain the position but Pow is very close to passing his half guard.

Pow is looking for a kimura here.
Pow is thwarting Locks's attempts to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Locks gets back to full guard.
Pow sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Locks pulls Pow in close to prevent any damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pow postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Boom Pow dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Locks misses with a leg kick.
Pow misses with a leg kick.
Locks misses with a takedown attempt - Pow sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Locks shoots and misses

and Pow holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Pow is trying to trip Locks. He has hold of a leg but Locks is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Pow persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Pow trying to control but Locks is working from the bottom.
Locks manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pow manages to get himself to full guard.
Locks wants to stand but Pow has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Locks stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pow swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Locks is breathing heavily.

Locks throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Locks looking to sit in guard and control but Pow gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Locks preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Locks keeping full guard, as Pow tries to pass.
Pow trying to control but Locks is working from the bottom.
Pow with a flurry of punches that miss.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Pow avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Locks looking for a sweep. Not yet Locks, not yet.
Pow advances to half guard.
Pow wants to lay and pray for a moment but Locks keeps working.

Pow is looking for a kimura but Locks is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Pow to get the leverage.
Locks is not content to let Pow control the position.
Locks keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pow connects with a nice short shot to Locks's temple.
Pow working over Locks with some ground and pound. Locks looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Pow is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Locks has managed to free his arm - good work.

Pow sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Locks defending well though.

Pow is trying to control the action in half guard but Locks is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Locks is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Pow scores with a couple of nice shots.

That's time! Back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Pow swats away the attempt to clinch by Locks.

Pow darts in and clinches Locks up against the cage.
Locks wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Pow has him pressed against the cage.
Locks prevents the takedown attempt.
Locks jumps guard but Pow turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Locks misses with a knee strike.
Locks dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Locks looking for a takedown.
Pow is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Locks is defending well.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Pow turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Pow manages to end up in side control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Pow scoring with punches and elbows.
Pow is looking to take a break and control but Locks is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Locks is trying to get back to half guard.
Pow lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Locks down.

Pow is trying to get an arm triangle but Locks is defending well.
Locks is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Locks is trying to maintain the position but Pow is very close to passing his half guard.

Pow is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Locks moves into full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pow seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Pow tries to free his leg and advance position but Locks is retaining full guard.

Locks wants to sweep but no luck.
Pow trying to control but Locks is working from the bottom.
Pow is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Locks trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Pow trying to control the position from guard on top but Locks is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Pow drops back looking for a leg! Locks is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Locks manages to kick Pow off! Pow jumps back into Locks's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Locks wants to sweep here but Pow controlling him for the moment.
Pow slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Locks throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Pow escapes and throws Locks's legs to the side, diving into side control!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Pow tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Boom Pow showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Pow has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A relieved looking Boom Pow thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
