PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sergio Paris (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mickey Ward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Paris!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mickey Ward!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Seu Braga and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paris misses with a body kick.
Paris cracks Ward with a right hand to the side of the head.
Ward wants to clinch up but Paris keeps it at a distance.
Paris tries to clinch up.

Paris tries to sprawl but Ward drives through with a takedown into half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Ward wants to control but Paris is keeping him busy.
Ward is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Ward is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Paris is just riding it out for now. Ward eventually gives up the hold.

Ward is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Paris doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Ward.

Ward slows the pace down in half guard.
Ward's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Ward seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Paris does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Mickey Ward hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Paris gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Ward must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Ward got a little sloppy there for a moment and Paris has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Ward has managed to get both his arms back between Paris's legs - danger averted.

Sergio Paris seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Paris shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Paris was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Ward is desperately trying to improve his position but Paris has a good base and remains in mount.

Ward is looking for a sweep. Paris is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Paris drops an elbow to the side of Ward's head.
Paris wants to control but Ward is keeping him busy.

Ward has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Paris is working away from the top position though.

Ward can't keep his opponent in guard - Paris advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Ward is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Paris to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Paris shrugs it off.

Paris might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Paris is desperately trying to improve his position but Ward has a good base and remains in mount.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sergio Paris.
Well Paris has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
