Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nick Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Romero Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Romero Gracie!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gracie drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Diaz throws a body punch but Gracie moves out of range.

Gracie fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Diaz sprawls well initially but Gracie persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Diaz is fighting off a takedown attempt but Gracie is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Diaz to the mat. Diaz regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!
Gracie postures up in Diaz's guard and throws a big left but Diaz blocks it.
Gracie wants to control from the top but Diaz keeps moving.
Diaz is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Gracie is pressing down on Diaz's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Gracie looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Diaz decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gracie, up you get!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Diaz closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Diaz lands in his opponent's guard.

Gracie is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Gracie is working for a kimura but Diaz is defending it quite comfortably.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gracie slips a nice elbow through Diaz's hands, connecting with Diaz's forehead.
Gracie has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Gracie is nestled in close to Diaz, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Gracie ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Gracie no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Diaz wanted to stand there but Gracie had control of the position.
Diaz has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Gracie feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Diaz trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Gracie sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Diaz's guard.

Gracie is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Diaz has managed to free his arm - good work.
Gracie throwing shots but Diaz is blocking nicely.
Gracie frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Gracie wants to control the pace but Diaz is squirming around nicely.
Diaz keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Romero Gracie showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Gracie has control of Diaz's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Diaz regains control of the situation pretty easily.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Gracie cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Diaz tries to hold on but Gracie pushes him away.
Gracie mounts Diaz! Really nice guard pass there!

Gracie throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Gracie won't let Diaz get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
The referee warns Diaz that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gracie scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Diaz tries to buck Gracie off but he can't manage it.
Gracie looking to control but Diaz is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Gracie lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Gracie jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Diaz is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Diaz and Gracie has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Diaz is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Gracie.

Gracie tries to pass to full mount but Diaz defends it.

Diaz clobbers Gracie with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Nick Diaz.
I think Gracie has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
