PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joey Gomez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luis Mendoza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Daniel Blasius and Nard Betker.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gomez takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Gomez shoots in but Mendoza avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Mendoza connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Mendoza digs a good body shot into Gomez's ribs.
Mendoza's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Mendoza duly obliges.
Gomez tries to close the distance and clinch but Mendoza swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nice sprawl there from Mendoza as Gomez shoots in.
Gomez ducks right into an uppercut from Mendoza.
Gomez throws an overhand right that lands on Mendoza's shoulder, as Mendoza tries to avoid the shot.
Mendoza scores with a hook.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gomez tries to clinch but Mendoza is having none of it.
Nice shot lands for Mendoza.
Mendoza leaves Gomez with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joey Gomez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mendoza moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Mendoza scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Gomez gets the takedown into side control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Mendoza manages to work his way to half guard, despite Gomez's best efforts.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mendoza is on top in guard.
Gomez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Mendoza in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Mendoza postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gomez is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Mendoza, into his guard.

Mendoza looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gomez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mendoza swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Mendoza has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Gomez doesn't defend quickly enough and Mendoza has managed to lock this one up! Can Gomez escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Mendoza on a fantastic submission victory.

A relieved looking Luis Mendoza thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
