PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frankenstein Lee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mario Benitti (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Benitti has chosen I Can't Live In a Living Room as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Mario Benitti is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Frankenstein Lee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mario Benitti!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lee takes the fight into the clinch.

Lee works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Benitti wants to sweep but no luck.
Lee wants to control from the top but Benitti keeps moving.
Benitti is controlling Lee's posture.
Benitti is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Benitti is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Lee connects with a couple of short punches.
Lee passes into half guard.

Benitti is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Lee pulls his head out easily.

Benitti is refusing to be controlled, as Lee sits in half guard.
Benitti gets back to full guard.
Benitti is pulling down on Lee's head. It's preventing any offense from Lee, at least for the moment.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Benitti can do anything to dispel that myth.

Benitti is looking for a triangle but Lee pushes his legs off easily.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Benitti is on top in guard.

Lee looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Lee has his foot on Benitti's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Benitti works his way back into a safe position though.
Benitti's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Benitti must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Lee is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Benitti defends well.
Benitti is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mario Benitti was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Lee feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Benitti seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Benitti is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Benitti slips a nice elbow through Lee's hands, connecting with Lee's forehead.
Benitti works his foot free and advances to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Benitti takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Lee is in a horrible position here. Benitti smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
This has been an exciting period of action!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Benitti tries to control but Lee wriggling away.
Lee is working to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mario Benitti will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Lee stuffs the takedown.
Benitti fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Benitti.
Lee tries to buck Benitti off but Benitti is having none of it.
Lee wants to control but Benitti postures up.
Lee tries to bench press Benitti off him but Benitti keeps the position.

Benitti wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Lee, who protects the arm well.

Benitti is trying to get an arm triangle but Lee is defending well.
Lee might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Benitti takes a little break here. Lee wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Lee is trying to control Benitti's posture but Benitti avoids it.
Benitti trying to control the position but Lee is working away.

Benitti tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Benitti has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Lee pushes Benitti away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Benitti gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Lee is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Benitti's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Benitti is keen to just control but Lee is a slippery customer.

Benitti is working for a kimura but Lee is defending it quite comfortably.
Lee is looking for a sweep. Benitti is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Lee wants to control but Benitti is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Benitti looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Lee is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Benitti's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Benitti's back!

Benitti gets to his feet - Lee follows without any prompting.
Benitti takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Lee drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Lee is stalling in the full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lee tries to free his leg and advance position but Benitti is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Frankenstein Lee will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Benitti is looking for a sweep.
Lee tries to move into full mount but can't pass Benitti's legs.
Benitti tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Lee wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Lee wants to stand but Benitti has his arm trapped.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

You can see the frustration on Benitti's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Benitti holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.

Benitti regains half guard.
Benitti regains full guard. Nicely done.
Lee trying to stand up but can't free himself from Benitti's guard.
Benitti pulls Lee in close to prevent any damage.

Lee passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Benitti!

Lee throws some wild stikes that Benitti manages to avoid easily.

Lee has hold of Benitti's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Benitti manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Lee goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Benitti turns into him and now he's in Lee's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Benitti tries to free his leg and advance position but Lee is retaining full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Mario Benitti.
I think Benitti has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
