PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Karim Chamakh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rainer Varvaskoukku (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chamakh kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Robyn - Indestructible. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 26 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Karim Chamakh!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 2, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rainer Varvaskoukku!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Aleksandr Martynov and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Varvaskoukku is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Varvaskoukku gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Varvaskoukku tries to work over Chamakh's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Varvaskoukku's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Chamakh moves out of range of the body kick from Varvaskoukku.
Varvaskoukku misses with a straight right.
Varvaskoukku throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Chamakh takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Varvaskoukku throws a nice looking combination but Chamakh bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Chamakh crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Varvaskoukku - the referee stops the clock and Chamakh gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Varvaskoukku. Chamakh manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Varvaskoukku connects with a right hand. Chamakh shakes it off.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Varvaskoukku.
Rainer Varvaskoukku seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Varvaskoukku closes the distance and clinches up with Chamakh, looking for a takedown. Varvaskoukku pushes Chamakh against the ropes but Chamakh circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Varvaskoukku fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Varvaskoukku throws a low kick, looking for Chamakh's leg but Chamakh calmly moves out of range.
Horrible takedown by Varvaskoukku or perhaps it was just good defense by Chamakh which made him look bad.
Varvaskoukku throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Varvaskoukku pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Varvaskoukku looks to land a right hand but Chamakh moved out of range.
Chamakh checks a low kick from Varvaskoukku.
Chamakh throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Varvaskoukku's waist but Varvaskoukku gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Chamakh off to one side.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Varvaskoukku throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Chamakh sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Chamakh moves out of range of the body kick from Varvaskoukku.
Chamakh fails with the takedown.
Varvaskoukku throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
The fight stays on the outside here - Varvaskoukku looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Varvaskoukku is looking to land body kicks.
Chamakh shoots for a takedown but Varvaskoukku saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Karim Chamakh. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chamakh moves out of range as Varvaskoukku throws a body kick.
Varvaskoukku looks to land a combination but Chamakh avoids it well.

Nice uppercut lands for Varvaskoukku. That snapped Chamakh's head back.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Chamakh has Varvaskoukku pressed against the ropes, preventing Varvaskoukku from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Varvaskoukku tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Varvaskoukku pulls guard effortlessly.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Chamakh avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Chamakh trying to control but Varvaskoukku is working from the bottom.

Varvaskoukku looking for a guillotine here but Chamakh defends easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Chamakh working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Varvaskoukku is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Chamakh cracks Varvaskoukku with a solid left hand.

Varvaskoukku is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Chamakh is aware though and is defending well.
Varvaskoukku is trying to control the position from the bottom.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Chamakh stands up over Varvaskoukku, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Varvaskoukku tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Chamakh with a flurry of punches that miss.

Varvaskoukku has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Chamakh should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Varvaskoukku has tightened it up now! Chamakh should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Rainer Varvaskoukku!

After winning the bout, Rainer Varvaskoukku thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
