PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Ryu Kingston (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ikaika Paulo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kingston kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Tank!. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ryu Kingston!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ikaika Paulo!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horrible takedown by Paulo or perhaps it was just good defense by Kingston which made him look bad.

Paulo closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kingston did well to prevent Paulo getting side control.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Kingston wants to get back to full guard.
Kingston is working hard here to advance position.
The fighters are battling for position here. Kingston manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Kingston wants to stand and escape but Paulo is having none of it.
Kingston looking to hit a scissor sweep but Paulo is one step ahead there.

Kingston has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Paulo can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Paulo wants to control from the top but Kingston keeps moving.

Paulo is fighting to break Kingston's control of his arms but Kingston is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Kingston really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Ikaika Paulo has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Paulo thuds a left hand into Kingston's body.
Kingston is breathing heavily.
Kingston moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

Paulo looks for a takedown but Kingston sprawls well.

and Kingston counters with a nice double leg into side control. Paulo won't be happy with that.
Ryu Kingston has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ikaika Paulo.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Ryu Kingston just wasn't active enough.
Kingston tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Kingston drives through with a takedown into guard.

Kingston has gone for a leg lock! Paulo slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kingston's guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Paulo sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kingston's guard.

Paulo is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Paulo slips a nice elbow through Kingston's hands, connecting with Kingston's forehead.
Kingston is not content to let Paulo control the position.
Paulo might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Kingston kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Paulo is stalling here. Kingston is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Paulo seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Kingston has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kingston happy to just control the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ikaika Paulo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kingston misses with a low kick.

Kingston closes the distance and pushes Paulo back into the cage.

and Kingston counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Paulo's guard now.

Kingston drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kingston jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Paulo is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Kingston stands up and waves to Paulo to follow him.

Kingston seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Paulo for as long as he can get away with.

Kingston goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Paulo will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kingston's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Paulo shoots in for a double leg but Kingston sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Kingston tries to move into full mount but can't pass Paulo's legs.

Paulo regains half guard.
Kingston wants to take a breather but Paulo is having none of it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Ryu Kingston.

Paulo tries to keep at a distance but Kingston has taken the fight into the clinch.

Kingston leaves Paulo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Paulo will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kingston moves into the clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Kingston jumps guard and drags Paulo to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Paulo won't allow Kingston to sweep him here.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Paulo will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Paulo tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kingston sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Paulo somewhat.

Kingston shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Paulo is trying to defend but Kingston finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Kingston in particular looking to stall.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Paulo has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kingston is working away from the top position though.

Kingston looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Still in half guard, Kingston seems content to control.
Kingston moves into full mount! Paulo won't be happy about that!

Kingston cracks Paulo with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Paulo is having to fend off submission attempts from Kingston, who is looking to sink in the choke. Kingston doesn't have the hooks in though and Paulo manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

Paulo wants to control from the top but Kingston keeps moving.

Ikaika Paulo has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ryu Kingston is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Paulo throws a big elbow that misses.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ryu Kingston showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kingston, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
