PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dallas Riley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Chaney (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James Chaney will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dallas Riley!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Chaney!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Robert Twigg and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Riley has closed the distance and engaged Chaney in a clinch.

Riley decides to pull guard.
Riley manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Chaney avoids a series of strikes thrown by Riley.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Riley unloads with some shots from mount but Chaney bucks and avoids them well.
Riley takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Riley cracks Chaney with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Chaney is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Chaney tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Chaney looks winded!

Riley tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Riley knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Chaney on the ground.

We're going to have a standup here because Dallas Riley wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Chaney tries for a takedown but Riley circles away easily

and Riley counters with a single leg into guard. Chaney didn't expect that.
Riley controlling from the top position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Riley stops Chaney from standing up.
Riley sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Chaney's guard.
Riley is looking to advance position but Chaney won't allow it.
Riley content to control rather than advance.

Riley has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Riley is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Chaney sees it coming and defends easily.

Riley thows a huge punch but Chaney dodges it nicely.

Riley is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Riley is keen to just control but Chaney is a slippery customer.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Riley uses his free foot to push down on Chaney's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Chaney.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Riley wants to control the pace but Chaney is squirming around nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Riley gets a double leg takedown into Chaney's guard.
Riley controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Riley shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Riley showed some decent athleticism there.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Riley is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Chaney moves into full guard.

Riley seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Riley is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Chaney doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Riley.
Riley moves nicely into side control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Chaney is pushing Riley's head away, looking to escape. Riley manages to hold on to the position though.
Chaney seems a little lost for a moment, as Riley dominates the positioning.

That's time! Riley's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Riley lands a head kick!
Chaney shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Riley sprawls well. Riley wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Chaney gets slowly back to his feet.
Riley is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Chaney can do to turn this around?
Riley leaves Chaney with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Riley instigates a clinch.

Riley jumps guard and drags Chaney to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Riley is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Chaney is aware though and is defending well.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Riley is pulling down on Chaney's head. It's preventing any offense from Chaney, at least for the moment.

Chaney looking to sit in guard and control but Riley gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Riley really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Riley slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Riley feints and as Chaney raises his hands in defense, Riley changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Chaney is working an open guard so Riley takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Riley lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Chaney throws a chopping leg kick but Riley manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

Riley has Chaney up against the cage in a clinch.

Riley jumps guard and drags Chaney to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Riley is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Riley wants to stand up but Chaney is controlling him.

Chaney has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Riley is proving hard to escape from.

It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.
Riley wants to get back to his feet but Chaney is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Chaney has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Riley is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Chaney yanks on the arm and Riley is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Chaney.
