PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fedor Sakuraba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fyodor Emelianenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sakuraba comes into the arena with Clubfoot blaring out of the sound system. Fyodor Emelianenko is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fedor Sakuraba!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fyodor Emelianenko!
The judges for this bout are Sergei Dronov, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Emelianenko moves into the clinch successfully.

Emelianenko tightens his grip and picks Sakuraba up, before dumping him to the ground. Sakuraba manages to land in guard.
Emelianenko should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Sakuraba has his foot on Emelianenko's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Emelianenko works his way back into a safe position though.
Emelianenko postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Sakuraba bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Emelianenko's guard.

Emelianenko is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Sakuraba won't allow Emelianenko to get back to his feet.

Sakuraba is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Emelianenko shoots for a double leg takedown but Sakuraba sprawls well. He's pushed Emelianenko's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Fyodor Emelianenko seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Emelianenko closes the distance and clinches up with Sakuraba, looking for a takedown. Emelianenko pushes Sakuraba against the cage but Sakuraba circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Sakuraba shoots for a takedown but Emelianenko saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Emelianenko cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sakuraba can't escape the position.
Emelianenko landing shots from mount.
Sakuraba tries to hold on but Emelianenko postures up.
Sakuraba can't escape the position.
Emelianenko trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Sakuraba is working to get back to half guard.
Emelianenko breaks from Sakuraba's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Sakuraba manages to regain half guard. Good work.

Emelianenko is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Emelianenko drops an elbow to the side of Sakuraba's head.

Emelianenko throwing strikes but missing.

Sakuraba is looking for a triangle but Emelianenko pushes his legs off easily.

Emelianenko content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Sakuraba manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Emelianenko manages to get himself to full guard.
Sakuraba postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Emelianenko wants to sweep here but Sakuraba controlling him for the moment.
Emelianenko lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Sakuraba!

Emelianenko jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Sakuraba is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Sakuraba and Emelianenko has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Emelianenko lands a nice forearm strike.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Fedor Sakuraba will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Sakuraba drives through with a takedown into guard.

Emelianenko working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sakuraba doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sakuraba manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Sakuraba keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Emelianenko's head.

Sakuraba drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Sakuraba jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Sakuraba thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Sakuraba is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Emelianenko as he works his way to full guard.
Emelianenko wants to sweep here but Sakuraba controlling him for the moment.

Sakuraba gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Emelianenko is breathing heavily.
Sakuraba fails with the takedown

and Emelianenko counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Emelianenko.

Sakuraba drags the fight down to the ground.
Fedor Sakuraba overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Sakuraba is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Emelianenko frees his head nicely. Oh but Sakuraba has switched to an armbar! Emelianenko is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
