Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Phelan Whelan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kazuo Takeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Phelan Whelan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kazuo Takeda!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Dean Styles and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Takeda darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Whelan is not content to let Takeda control the position.

Takeda is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Takeda looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Takeda is working for a kimura but Whelan is defending it quite comfortably.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Takeda sitting and controlling from the half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Takeda thows a huge punch but Whelan dodges it nicely.
Takeda is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Whelan!

Takeda looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Takeda looking to finish with strikes here!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Takeda tries to control but Whelan wriggling away.
Takeda thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Takeda thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Takeda trying to control but Whelan is having none of it.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Takeda thowing shots but they're missing.
Takeda misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Takeda tries to control but Whelan wriggling away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Takeda fails to take his opponent's back.
Takeda controlling from the full mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kazuo Takeda dominated that round.
That's time! Whelan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Whelan has managed to clinch.
Takeda tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Whelan smiles and moves away.
Takeda closes the distance and clinches up with Whelan, looking for a takedown. Takeda pushes Whelan against the cage but Whelan circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Takeda feints and as Whelan raises his hands in defense, Takeda changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Whelan keeping moving, preventing Takeda from controlling successfully.
Takeda controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Whelan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Takeda passes into half guard.
Takeda thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Whelan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Takeda on the ground.
Takeda is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Takeda seems to be looking for submissions.
Well, if Takeda is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Takeda wants to pass the guard but Whelan is defending well.
Takeda works his way into full mount!
Takeda punching from mount but Whelan doing a good job of avoiding damage.

Takeda tries to control but Whelan wriggling away.
Whelan holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Takeda tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Takeda takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Despite being in the dominant position, Kazuo Takeda just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Whelan lands a jab to Takeda's midsection.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Takeda looks to clinch
and Whelan counters with an inside leg kick.

Takeda looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Whelan!
Takeda content just to control the position here.
Let's hope that Takeda has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Takeda has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Takeda looking to control but Whelan is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kazuo Takeda showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Whelan lands a slapping body shot.

and Whelan counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Takeda tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Whelan counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Phelan Whelan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kazuo Takeda.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Whelan looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Whelan stuns Takeda with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Takeda shoots and misses

so Whelan counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Whelan trying to control the position from guard on top but Takeda is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Takeda pulls Whelan in close to his closed guard and prevents Whelan from doing any damage or advancing position.

Takeda has an active guard here but Whelan has managed to pass into half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Whelan prevents Takeda from improving his position.
Takeda slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Takeda is pulling down on Whelan's head. It's preventing any offense from Whelan, at least for the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Takeda looking to control.
Takeda throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Whelan has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Takeda controls Whelan momentarily but Whelan frees himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Takeda might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Whelan kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Takeda looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Takeda wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Whelan is now in half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Whelan trying to mount his opponent but Takeda defends it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Phelan Whelan showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Takeda has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
