PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Boozan Rios (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Boozan Rios!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jake Pettis!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Micheangelo Fripello and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rios shoots in and drives through. Pettis sprawls well.
Rios checks a leg kick.
Rios takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Pettis moves out of range of the body kick from Rios.
Rios takes a kick to the side of the head.


Rios is rocked!
Pettis thows a left - swing and a miss!
Oh Rios is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Rios avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Rios throws a body kick that misses.
Pettis misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Rios seems to have got his legs back now.
Rios avoids a punch combination nicely.
Pettis tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Pettis takes a swing at Rios's ribcage but misses.
A bone on bone clash there as Rios blocks the leg kick.
Rios avoids a kick to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rios avoids the head kick by Pettis.

Rios bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Pettis is trying to get back to half guard.

Rios tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Pettis is looking for a sweep.
Rios trying to control the position but Pettis is working away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Pettis manages to work his way to half guard, despite Rios's best efforts.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rios prevents Pettis from standing back up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Rios has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Boozan Rios.
Pettis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Rios dives in and scores a takedown into Pettis's guard.
Rios in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Rios is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pettis is looking for a triangle but Rios pushes his legs off easily.
Pettis can't keep his opponent in guard - Rios advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rios stops Pettis from getting back to his feet.
Pettis looks winded!
Rios perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Ground and pound from Rios.
Rios scoring with strikes to the body and head.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Rios trying to control from half guard but Pettis is working away.
Pettis pushes Rios off looking to stand but Rios dives back in and keeps control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Rios is looking for a kimura but Pettis is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Rios to get the leverage.

Pettis looking for a kimura from the bottom but Rios passes into side control!
Pettis is trying to get back to half guard.

Rios has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Pettis is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Rios yanks on the arm and Pettis is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Rios.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:45 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Boozan Rios!
