PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Macena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gabriel Cardoso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel Macena!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel Cardoso!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Mauricio Rocha and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cardoso rushes Macena and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Macena has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Cardoso avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Cardoso pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Macena fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Macena wants to clinch.
Macena throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Cardoso's waist but Cardoso gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Macena off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Daniel Macena. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nice sprawl there from Cardoso as Macena shoots in.
Macena tries to clinch up.
Cardoso jabs Macena to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Macena shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Cardoso rushes Macena and presses him up against the cage.

Cardoso manages to break the clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Macena is defended easily by Cardoso.

Cardoso escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Cardoso throws a quick inside leg kick.
Cardoso shoots in for a takedown but Macena shows good takedown defense.
Cardoso looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Macena is fending him off so far but Cardoso persists. Nope, Macena circles away and we're back to standing.

Macena looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Macena is thwarting Cardoso's attempts to control the position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Macena is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Cardoso is looking to escape.

Macena stalling.
Cardoso is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Macena working over Cardoso with some ground and pound. Cardoso looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Macena wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cardoso keeps working.

Macena seems to be looking for submissions.
Macena tries to pass the half guard into mount. Cardoso knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Macena is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Cardoso sees it coming and defends easily.

Macena is looking for a kimura here.
Cardoso is looking to improve his position.
Cardoso really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Macena. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Macena is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Cardoso is just riding it out for now. Macena eventually gives up the hold.
Cardoso wants to improve his position but Macena is controlling well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Macena is working for a kimura but Cardoso is defending it quite comfortably.
Macena trying to control the action but Cardoso is working from the bottom.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Macena is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Cardoso has managed to free his arm - good work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Daniel Macena will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Macena tries to clinch but Cardoso moves out of range.

Macena decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Macena really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Macena is looking for a kimura but Cardoso is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Macena to get the leverage.

Macena looks to land a strike but Cardoso avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Macena scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Macena trying to control the position from guard on top but Cardoso is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Cardoso has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Macena can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Cardoso is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Cardoso tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Cardoso is breathing heavily.
Macena wants to pass the guard but Cardoso is keeping the position.

Macena trying to control but Cardoso is working from the bottom.

Macena thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Macena passes Cardoso's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Macena stands up and beckons Cardoso to join him on the feet.

Cardoso clinches with his opponent.
Cardoso has a couple of punches blocked by Macena.
Cardoso misses with some punches.
Macena goes for a takedown in the clinch but Cardoso prevents it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Macena holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Cardoso tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Cardoso pulls Macena into guard.
Daniel Macena overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Macena postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Cardoso is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Macena, into his guard.
Macena will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Cardoso wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Macena's closed guard. He's half up but Macena has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Macena pivots and extends the arm, Cardoso falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Macena! Well done that man!
