PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alistar Overeem (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leon Kenody (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Overeem comes into the arena with Grafh - Knock'em Down blaring out of the sound system. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Alistar Overeem!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Leon Kenody!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Patrick Alders and Wagner Zegers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kenody gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Kenody tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Overeem tries to pull guard but Kenody holds him up against the cage and eventually Overeem drops back down to his feet.
Overeem gets underhooks to prevent Kenody's takedown attempt.
Kenody tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Overeem avoids it.
Kenody wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Overeem jumps guard.
Overeem is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Kenody slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Kenody stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Overeem swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Overeem trying to keep a closed guard but Kenody is proving a slippery customer.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Alistar Overeem wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Overeem doesn't manage to clinch there - Kenody circles away.
Horrible takedown by Overeem or perhaps it was just good defense by Kenody which made him look bad.
Overeem with a lazy takedown attempt

and Kenody counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Kenody.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alistar Overeem. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kenody passes into half guard.
Kenody content to control rather than advance.
Kenody's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Overeem knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kenody on the ground.

Kenody looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Kenody passes the guard and advances to mount!
Overeem is bucking up trying to escape but Kenody cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kenody content just to control the position here.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Kenody cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Kenody avoids the attempt from Overeem to control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kenody scoring with strikes but Overeem is staying in there.
Kenody controlling from the full mount.
Let's hope that Kenody has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Overeem takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kenody cracks Overeem with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Overeem is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leon Kenody dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A big left from Kenody misses.

Kenody takes the fight into the clinch.
A short right from Overeem.
Overeem jumps guard but Kenody turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Kenody has Overeem pressed against the cage.

Overeem manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Overeem controls Kenody momentarily but Kenody frees himself.
Kenody showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Kenody distracts Overeem with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Overeem working for a triangle but Kenody defends it easily.
Kenody is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Overeem working a defensive guard here.

Kenody decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Overeem with a poor takedown

so Kenody counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Kenody makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Kenody stands up and waves to Overeem to follow him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Overeem swinging wildly here.

Kenody closes the distance and clinches.
Overeem is trying to stall.

Kenody jumps guard and drags Overeem to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kenody is on top in guard.
Overeem looking to control.
Leon Kenody has got the better of the ground game so far.

Kenody is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Kenody landing some decent shots from guard.
Kenody advances to half guard.
Kenody is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Kenody tries to pass the half guard into mount. Overeem knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Well, if Kenody is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Kenody postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Overeem to stand up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Overeem looks for a takedown but Kenody sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alistar Overeem. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kenody rushes Overeem and presses him up against the cage.
Overeem is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Kenody is defending well.

Kenody's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Kenody shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Kenody showed some decent athleticism there.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kenody decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Leon Kenody showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Kenody stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Overeem swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kenody is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Kenody trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Kenody forces his way into half guard.
Kenody takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Leon Kenody wasn't active enough on the ground.
Overeem looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kenody is fending him off so far but Overeem persists. Nope, Kenody circles away and we're back to standing.
Kenody uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Overeem.
Overeem with a poor takedown

and Kenody counters with a takedown into side control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kenody controls the position from side control.
Kenody works to advance to full mount. Overeem defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kenody lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Kenody looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Overeem tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Kenody looking to isolate an arm here. Overeem doesn't see it coming and as Kenody extends the arm, he's forced to tap out! Nice submission by Kenody!
