PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brock Shamrock (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ong Bak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bak has chosen One Night In Bangkok as his entrance music. Bak has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Brock Shamrock!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ong Bak!
The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Radbod Blank and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bak takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Bak looks winded!

Shamrock clinches up against the cage.

Shamrock pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Shamrock lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Bak circles away quickly and effectively.
Nice sprawl there from Bak as Shamrock shoots in.
Some wild striking there from Shamrock.
Bak wants to clinch up but Shamrock keeps it at a distance.

Shamrock closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Shamrock has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Shamrock controlling the pace for now.
Shamrock wants to control the pace but Bak is squirming around nicely.

Shamrock gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Shamrock dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
The fight stays on the outside here - Shamrock looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Bak checks the leg kick nicely there.
Bak tries a head kick but it misses.
Shamrock throws a right and a left that Bak avoids nicely.

Shamrock closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Bak to the mat! Bak manages to get full guard.

Shamrock content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Shamrock tries to pass to full mount but Bak defends it.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Shamrock is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Bak is working to get back to half guard.

Shamrock can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Bak is looking to escape.
Shamrock landing punches.

Shamrock gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Shamrock missing with a left hand there. Bak was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Bak takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Shamrock tries to bum rush Bak with a series of wild strikes but Bak uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Bak avoids a punch combination nicely.

Shamrock thows a body shot but no joy.
Shamrock scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Bak doesn't seem bothered though.
Shamrock lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Bak circles away quickly and effectively.
Shamrock is looking to wear down Bak with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Shamrock looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bak is fending him off so far but Shamrock persists. Nope, Bak circles away and we're back to standing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Shamrock pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Shamrock tries to clinch
and Bak counters with a head kick. That will keep Shamrock thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Shamrock will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Bak tries to sprawl but Shamrock drives through with a takedown into half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Shamrock tries to pass to full mount but Bak defends it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bak is staying active underneath Shamrock, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brock Shamrock dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Shamrock throws a right and a left that both miss.
Shamrock missing with a left hand there. Bak was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Brock Shamrock is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Bak fails in his attempt to clinch.
Shamrock throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Shamrock is trying hard to land a takedown here. Bak sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Shamrock fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Bak, pushing him back against the cage.
Shamrock drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Bak gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Bak tries to pull guard but Shamrock forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Shamrock blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Shamrock turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Shamrock manages to end up in side control.
Bak is breathing heavily.
Shamrock cracks Bak with an elbow. That is naaassty.

The ground and pound from Shamrock seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Bak is trying to improve his position.
Shamrock grinds an elbow into Bak's temple.

Shamrock stands up.
Shamrock tries to clinch up.
Bak slaps away a takedown attempt from Shamrock, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brock Shamrock. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Shamrock throws a sloppy head kick and Bak moves out of range easily.
Shamrock scores to the head and body with a nice combination!


It looks like Ong Bak has been cut.

Shamrock misses with a low kick.
Shamrock tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Bak manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Shamrock tries to clinch but Bak is having none of it.
Bak slaps away a takedown attempt from Shamrock, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Shamrock is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Bak can do to turn this around?

Shamrock drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Shamrock tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

Shamrock decides to stand back up.
Shamrock misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Shamrock shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Shamrock was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Bak has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Shamrock's lack of action.

Shamrock seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Shamrock throws a nice looking combination but Bak bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Brock Shamrock is winning the standup battle so far.
Shamrock shoots for a takedown but Bak saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Bak stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Bak wants it to stay on the feet.
Shamrock keeps the fight on the outside.
Bak shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Shamrock as he avoids it easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Bak pivots, looking for a leg kick but Shamrock is out of range and Bak settles back down.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shamrock fails to land the takedown.
Shamrock shoots in but no luck this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brock Shamrock dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Ong Bak's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Bak lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Shamrock feints and then cracks Bak's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Bak down.
Shamrock closes this distance looking for a takedown but Bak circles away.

Shamrock shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Bak napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Bak wants to control but Shamrock postures up.

Shamrock stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Shamrock throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Bak.
Shamrock fails to land with a series of punches.
Shamrock misses with a head kick.
Shamrock walks into a left hand.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Bak looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Shamrock looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bak is fending him off so far but Shamrock persists. Nope, Bak circles away and we're back to standing.
Bak throws a head kick that Shamrock semi-blocks.

Shamrock fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Bak lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Shamrock has managed to clinch.

Shamrock has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Bak uses from the top position.

Shamrock is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Shamrock looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Bak trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Bak drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Shamrock manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Bak has Shamrock in his guard.

Bak escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Shamrock gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Shamrock throws a big elbow that misses.
Ong Bak has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Shamrock landing some decent shots from guard.
Shamrock has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Bak is proving hard to escape from.
Shamrock stands and throws Bak's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Shamrock wants to control but Bak is keeping him busy.

Bak tries to buck Shamrock off but Shamrock is having none of it.

Shamrock has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Shamrock lands a nice looking body shot.
Shamrock takes a swing at Bak's ribcage but misses.
Shamrock shoots in but Bak avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Bak tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shamrock throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Brock Shamrock is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Shamrock drives through and clinches with Bak against the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Brock Shamrock showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Shamrock has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
