PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Matheus Fonseca (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Gold (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fonseca comes to the cage accompanied by Funkist-Snow Fairy. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Fonseca!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jim Gold!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Seu Braga and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gold has his takedown stuffed

and Fonseca counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Fonseca advances position into side control!
Gold being controlled for a moment.
Gold really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Fonseca. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Gold is trying to control Fonseca's posture but Fonseca avoids it.
Fonseca fails to land a wild elbow strike.

Fonseca is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Gold knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Gold is pushing Fonseca's head away, looking to escape. Fonseca manages to hold on to the position though.

Gold tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Fonseca thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Gold tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Fonseca wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Gold tries to bench press Fonseca off him but Fonseca keeps the position.
Fonseca is staying tight to Gold's torso, preventing him from escaping.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Fonseca decides to stand back up.
Gold shoots in looking for a takedown but Fonseca manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Gold's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gold changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Fonseca tries to avoid it but Gold manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Fonseca to the ground. Fonseca escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Matheus Fonseca has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jim Gold.
Gold changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Fonseca tries to avoid it but Gold manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Fonseca to the ground. Fonseca escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Gold shoots in and drives through. Fonseca sprawls well.
Gold looks winded!

Fonseca moves into the clinch successfully.

Fonseca gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Fonseca stands up from Gold's guard - Fonseca perhaps looking for a knockout.
Fonseca tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gold swats him away and circles back towards the center.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gold looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Fonseca is fending him off so far but Gold persists. Nope, Fonseca circles away and we're back to standing.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Gold enables Fonseca to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gold manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Fonseca looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Fonseca content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Gold is trying to control the position from the bottom.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Fonseca works a leg free and moves into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matheus Fonseca dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Fonseca gets the takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fonseca moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Gold wants to get back to his feet but Fonseca is dominant here and he's now got Gold's back!

Fonseca is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Gold is defending well though. Fonseca let's go of the attempt for now.
I would not like to be Gold right now.
Gold looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands.
Gold wants to escape the position.

Gold trying to get back to his feet but Fonseca is in full control for now.

Fonseca is looking for the choke from the back position but Gold is controlling his hands well.
Gold prevents Fonseca from getting a body triangle.
Fonseca is hanging on to Gold's back as he tries to escape.
Fonseca gets his hands free as Gold looks to control.
Fonseca keeps control of the position as Gold tries to break free.
Fonseca trying to control momentarily.

Gold defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Fonseca's arms.
Fonseca lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Gold hold on?!
Fonseca biding his time, controlling Gold.

Fonseca looking to break Gold's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Gold remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Fonseca will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Gold is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Gold is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

Fonseca working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Gold is doing well to defend. Fonseca seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Gold is forced to tap and this one is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Matheus Fonseca!
After winning the bout, Matheus Fonseca thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
