PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Robert Boyd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Spike Hawk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hawk has chosen Across the Nation as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Robert Boyd!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Spike Hawk!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Chris Downing and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boyd lands a two punch combo.
Boyd looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Hawk changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Boyd tries to avoid it but Hawk manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Boyd to the ground. Boyd escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Hawk scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Boyd managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Hawk.

Hawk has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Hawk has Boyd up against the cage in a clinch.

Hawk lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hawk trying to mount his opponent but Boyd defends it.

Hawk is looking for a kimura but Boyd is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hawk to get the leverage.

Hawk slows the pace down in half guard.
Hawk frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Boyd holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Hawk tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

Hawk cracks Boyd with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Hawk looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boyd takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hawk has hold of Boyd's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Boyd manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Hawk sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Let's hope that Hawk has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hawk is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Boyd to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Boyd shrugs it off.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Hawk gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Spike Hawk dominated that round.
That's time! Boyd's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Hawk ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Hawk thuds his shin into the meat of Boyd's side.
Boyd on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Hawk darts in and clinches Boyd up against the cage.
Boyd stops a takedown attempt from Hawk.

Hawk has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Boyd clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Hawk has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Boyd's body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Hawk looking for the choke but no joy.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hawk has good solid back control here.
Hawk scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Boyd is looking for a way out.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
What can Boyd do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Hawk lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Hawk.

Hawk has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hawk is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Boyd has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Spike Hawk has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hawk has good solid back control here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Spike Hawk showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Boyd slaps away a takedown attempt from Hawk, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Hawk fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Boyd gets caught flat footed, as Hawk shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Hawk controlling from the top position.
Hawk's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Hawk decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Boyd, up you get!
A right-left combo lands from Hawk.


It looks like Robert Boyd has been cut.
Spike Hawk seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hawk connects with a high kick.
Boyd takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Boyd tries to sprawl but Hawk drives through with a takedown into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hawk thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Boyd's head.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hawk is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Boyd is just riding it out for now. Hawk eventually gives up the hold.
Hawk thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Boyd's head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hawk is taking a breather. Boyd says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Spike Hawk.
Boyd avoids the head kick by Hawk.
Hawk scores with a hook to the body. Boyd takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Hawk tries a head kick but it misses.
Hawk misses with a takedown attempt
and Boyd counters with a left and a right that stings Hawk.
Robert Boyd has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Spike Hawk.

Boyd gets caught napping as Hawk dives in and scores a takedown. Boyd manages to retain guard.

Boyd pushes Hawk off and scrambles back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Boyd closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Hawk to the mat! Hawk manages to get full guard.
Boyd trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Hawk wants to sweep but no luck.
Boyd landing some decent shots from guard.
Hawk is trying to control the position but Boyd postures up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Boyd stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hawk swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Spike Hawk comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Hawk has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A determined Spike Hawk didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
