PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Choke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Son (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Joe Son was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jack Choke!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joe Son!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Son has taken the fight to the clinch.
Choke goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Son.
Choke tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Son just stands there and leans against the cage.
Son softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.
Son fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Choke stalling in the clinch.
Son misses with a punch to the body.

Choke manages to pull guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Choke bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Son's guard.
Choke looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Son wants to stand but Choke is controlling the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Son has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Choke has passed into side control.
Son is trying to buck Choke off.
Son is trying to control Choke's posture but Choke avoids it.
Choke controls the position from side control.
Choke landing a few strikes.
Choke remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Choke tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Choke just content to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We're going to have a standup here because Jack Choke wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Son slaps away a takedown attempt from Choke, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Son connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Choke momentarily.
Son scores with a hook to the body. Choke takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Choke drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Son is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Choke asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Son looks winded!
Son is trying to control Choke's posture but Choke avoids it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Choke content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Jack Choke just wasn't active enough.

Son pushes Choke up against the cage in a clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Son tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Choke's elbow.
Choke tries to pull guard but Son holds him up against the cage and eventually Choke drops back down to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Choke dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Choke gets tackled into the cage by Son. Son maintains the clinch.
Choke can't find room to land a body shot as Son controls the action.
Choke slowing the pace effectively.
Choke tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Son just stands there and leans against the cage.
Son throws a head punch that misses.
Choke drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Son gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Son prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Choke. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Choke just leaning against Son, taking a breather.
Son working Choke over with knees to the body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Son takes the fight into the clinch.
Choke stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Choke fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Choke drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Son gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Son wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Son tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Choke's elbow.
Son tries a body shot but Choke blocks it.

Son's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Son breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Son gets a clinch.
Choke jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Son walks away with a smile on his face. Choke gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Choke shoots in but Son avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Son clinches.
Choke on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Choke keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Son's efforts to push away.
Stalling in the clinch from Son.
Son is trying to break the clinch but Choke has him pressed against the cage.
Son slowing the pace effectively.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Choke displaying some good clinch control by pressing Son up against the cage.

Son scores with a shoulder strike.
Son tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Son crunches a lovely knee into Choke's ribcage.
Son working hard to break the clinch.
Choke avoiding damage as Son throws knees to the body.
Son lands a nice shot to the body.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Son.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Son just misses with a elbow thrown towards Choke's brow.
Choke dodges an elbow strike from Son.
Son lands a right hand.
Son throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Choke dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Knees to the body from Son.
Son is trying to force a seperation but Choke has the dominant position.
Son misses with a body punch.

Son breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Son gets a takedown into half guard.
Son thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Son thows a huge punch but Choke dodges it nicely.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Choke looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Son is trying to work for a kimura but Choke is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Son showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Son has closed the distance and engaged Choke in a clinch.

Choke has picked Son up - he's going for a ride! Choke dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Choke stops Son from getting back to his feet.
Son tries to get to full guard but Choke has control of the leg.
Choke sitting and controlling from the half guard.

Jack Choke overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Son wants to control the action here but instead Choke manages to pass to full mount!
Son takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Choke controlling his opponent.
Son is looking to get to half guard.

Choke stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Choke tries for a takedown but Son circles away easily
and Son finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

Son looking to score a takedown here. Choke is defending well but Son drives through and ends up in Choke's guard.
Son must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Choke looking for a triangle here. Son is fighting it but it looks tight! Choke pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Son is tapping out - this one is all over!
