Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Leandro Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kris Smyth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alves comes to the cage accompanied by Thin Lizzy - Angel of Death. Smyth has chosen Painkiller - Pendulum feat. Freestylers as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Leandro Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kris Smyth!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Steve Smith and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alves shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smyth but Smyth pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Smyth defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Alves.
Smyth looks for the body kick but Alves saw that one coming.
Alves throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Smyth stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Alves throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Smyth was covering up waiting for the punch and Alves finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Alves won't allow Smyth to sweep him here.
Alves trying to control but Smyth is working from the bottom.
Alves trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Smyth looking to hit a scissor sweep but Alves is one step ahead there.

Alves missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Smyth looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Alves stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smyth swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smyth wants to sweep here but Alves controlling him for the moment.
Alves wants to pass the guard but Smyth is keeping the position.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Alves feints and as Smyth raises his hands in defense, Alves changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Alves pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smyth is keeping the position for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smyth has control of Alves's left arm, preventing Alves from doing any damage.
Alves advances to half guard.

Alves is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Smyth trying to control but Alves postures up.
Alves trying to mount his opponent but Smyth defends it.
Alves trying to control from half guard but Smyth is working away.

Smyth wants to improve his position but Alves is controlling well.
Alves seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Smyth does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Alves is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smyth doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Alves.
Alves is pressing down on Smyth's thigh, looking to free his foot. Smyth is holding on for now.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Smyth wants to improve his position but Alves is controlling well.
Smyth moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Alves trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Smyth manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!
Smyth wants to control from the top but Alves keeps moving.
Smyth not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Smyth must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Alves blocks a low kick nicely.
Smyth leaves Alves with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Smyth scores with the left hand. Alves knows he should have avoided that one.
Smyth fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Alves manages to avoid it.
Good leg kick by Smyth there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Alves dodges the punch combination from Smyth.
Alves lands a jab to Smyth's midsection.
Smyth keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Smyth throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Smyth throws a body kick that misses.
Alves looks to score with a jab to the body but Smyth is just out of range.
Alves looks for a takedown but Smyth sprawls well.

Alves shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Alves was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Smyth is working to get back to half guard.
Smyth wants to hold on but Alves pushes him away.

Alves avoids the attempt from Smyth to control.
Smyth sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Smyth wants to control but Alves is keeping busy.

Alves is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Smyth is just riding it out for now. Alves eventually gives up the hold.
Smyth is trying to get back to full guard.

Alves with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alves tries to pass the half guard into mount. Smyth knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Smyth slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Smyth looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Alves drops back looking for a leg! Smyth is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smyth manages to kick Alves off! Alves jumps back into Smyth's guard.

Smyth is trying to hold Alves in close to prevent damage but Alves has managed to pass into half guard.
Smyth is trying to control but can't.
Smyth tries to roll over but Alves keeps him under control.

Alves is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Smyth has managed to free his arm - good work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Kris Smyth will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Alves's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Alves tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Alves thows a body shot but no joy.
Smyth misses with a wild body shot.
Smyth uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Alves.
Alves misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Alves avoids the head kick by Smyth.

Alves tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smyth was well out of range. Poor timing from Alves.
Smyth defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Alves.
Alves ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Smyth moves away.
Smyth slaps away a takedown attempt from Alves, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Leandro Alves. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smyth scores with a head kick.
An inside leg kick lands from Alves.
Smyth thows a body shot but no joy.
Kris Smyth seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Alves takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

Alves fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Smyth manages to avoid it.
Alves misses with an uppercut.
Alves misses the shot to the body.
Alves changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Smyth tries to avoid it but Alves manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Smyth to the ground. Smyth escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Alves connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Smyth checks the leg kick nicely there.
Alves has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Smyth.
Alves cracks Smyth with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Leandro Alves seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Some wild striking there from Smyth.

Alves tries to land a leg kick but Smyth saw it coming and moves away.
Alves jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Smyth plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Alves looks to land a right hand but Smyth moved out of range.
Smyth scores with a nice body kick.
Alves keeps the fight on the outside.

Alves closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Smyth sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Alves is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Alves wants to lay and pray for a moment but Smyth keeps working.
Smyth is controlling Alves's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Alves is working for an americana but Smyth has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Alves was thinking about the submission.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Kris Smyth comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Smyth has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
