Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Bill Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gauge Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bill Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gauge Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Jeff Smith and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Penn shoots in for a double leg but Diaz sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Penn fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Diaz doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into side control. Diaz won't be happy with that.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Penn tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Penn has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Diaz tries to bench press Penn off him but Penn keeps the position.

Penn is looking to take a break and control but Diaz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Diaz can do anything to dispel that myth.
Penn tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

Diaz manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Diaz won't allow Penn to pass to mount.

Penn is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Diaz sees it coming and defends easily.

Penn is looking for a kimura but Diaz is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Penn to get the leverage.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Diaz wants to get back to his feet.
Diaz works his way to full guard. Good work.
Penn wants to control from the top but Diaz keeps moving.

Diaz pushes Penn off and gets back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Penn shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Penn was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Penn tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Diaz is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Penn wants to stand and escape but Diaz is having none of it.

Penn is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Diaz scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Penn keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Diaz is keen to just control but Penn is a slippery customer.

Diaz wants to take a breather but Penn is having none of it.
Still in half guard, Diaz seems content to control.

Diaz seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Diaz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Diaz content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Penn has locked up a guillotine! Penn's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Diaz is holding on here and Penn must be using up a lot of energy. Diaz has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Penn gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
