PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jacob Watling (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Boris Babel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jacob Watling!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Boris Babel!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Watling gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Babel wants the takedown. Watling is fighting it off but Babel persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Watling's guard against the cage.
Babel throwing strikes from guard but Watling blocks nicely.
Babel controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Babel trying to control the position from guard on top but Watling is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Boris Babel.

Watling moves into range and clinches up with Babel.

Babel is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Watling can't fight it off and eventually Babel manages to take the fight to the floor. Watling looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Babel postures up in Watling's guard and throws a big left but Watling blocks it.
Watling is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Babel prevents Watling from getting back to his feet.

Babel postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Watling not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Watling is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Babel is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Jacob Watling just wasn't active enough.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Watling enables Babel to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Watling manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Watling is breathing heavily.

Babel lands a couple of digs.
Watling could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Babel not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Babel wants to pass the guard but Watling is keeping the position.
Babel throws an elbow that misses. Watling uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Babel's guard. Nice move by Watling!
Babel pulls Watling in close to prevent any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jacob Watling.

Babel rushes Watling and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Watling pulls guard effortlessly.
Babel trying to control but Watling is working from the bottom.
Watling might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Watling keeping full guard, as Babel tries to pass.
Watling is trying to control the position but Babel postures up.
Babel is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Babel scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Watling controls Babel momentarily but Babel frees himself.
Babel wants to control from the top but Watling keeps moving.

Babel engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Let's hope that Babel has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Boris Babel wasn't active enough on the ground.

Babel shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Babel lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Babel throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Babel is taking a breather. Watling says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Babel not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Boris Babel dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Babel takes the fight into the clinch.

Babel escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Watling clinches.

Babel gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Babel sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Watling defending well though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Watling has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Babel is working away from the top position though.
Babel takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Babel working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Watling avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Babel.

Babel looking to finish Watling with some ground and pound. This is bad for Watling!
Watling takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.


It looks like Jacob Watling has been cut.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Babel loads up with a big shot that hurts Watling! He's pulled Babel in close but Babel has postured up and lands more strikes. Can Watling survive? More strikes from Babel and Watling is out! The ref jumps in to save him! Brutal ground and pound!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Boris Babel!
