PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Bill Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lionel Evans (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lionel Evans told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bill Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Lionel Evans!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Jeff Smith and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn has a takedown stuffed.
Penn has his takedown stuffed

and Evans counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Evans.
Evans can't get the takedown.
Evans can't break the clinch.
Evans is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Penn to keep the fight standing.
Penn is looking for a takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bill Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Evans is pressed up against the cage. Penn has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Evans down to the mat. Evans avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Evans throws a right and a left that both miss.
Evans leaves Penn with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Evans shoots in and bounces Penn off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Penn trying to keep a closed guard but Evans is proving a slippery customer.

Penn is looking for a triangle but Evans pushes his legs off easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Penn pushes Evans off and gets back to his feet.
Penn fails with the takedown

and Evans counters with a nice double leg into side control. Penn won't be happy with that.

Evans tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Evans wants to control but Penn is keeping him busy.
Evans wants to stand but Penn is controlling his arm.
Evans advances to full mount.
Penn bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Evans keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass.
Evans looking to hit a scissor sweep but Penn is one step ahead there.
Evans looks winded!
Penn connects with a couple of short punches.
Evans trying to keep a closed guard but Penn is proving a slippery customer.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Evans throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Evans wants to sweep but no luck.

Evans escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Penn gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Penn thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Penn passes Evans's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Penn passes to full mount!

Penn looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Evans keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Penn jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Evans manages to avoid the submission attempt.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Penn is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Evans is trying to escape and Penn transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Evans is forced to tap! Nice work there by Penn! Very nice indeed!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Bill Penn!
