PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Baki Hanma (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rip James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Baki Hanma!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rip James!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Tiny Johnson and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big left from Hanma misses.
Hanma throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
James uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Hanma.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Hanma misses with a looping right.
Hanma looks to land a right hand but James moved out of range.
Rip James seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hanma is looking to land body kicks.
James defending well as Hanma loads up on a big left hand.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hanma fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches James on the side of the head.
Hanma misses with a straight left.
Hanma will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Hanma drops James with a beautiful combination! James stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Hanma is looking for the KO!


James is rocked!

Hanma throws out a loose jab but James uses good head movement to avoid it.
James defending well as Hanma loads up on a big left hand.
Hanma throws a head kick but James moves out of range.

James fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Hanma sprawls well initially but James persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Hanma knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for James on the ground.
James works his way into side control.

James tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no James has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

James advances to full mount.

It looks like Baki Hanma has been cut.
James mounts Hanma! Really nice guard pass there!
Hanma manages to regain half guard. Good work.
James wants to pass to mount but Hanma is defending the position.

Hanma wants to control but James is keeping busy.
Hanma pushes James off looking to stand but James dives back in and keeps control.

James seems to be looking for submissions.

James is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hanma is just riding it out for now. James eventually gives up the hold.
James wants to pass the guard but Hanma is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Rip James will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Baki Hanma's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Hanma jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Hanma misses with a straight left.
Hanma is really struggling to find his range with his punches. Hanma's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.
Hanma works the jab nicely.
A solid body kick from Hanma.
A choreographed right hand from Hanma misses the target.
Hanma scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Hanma throws a hook but James avoids it easily.
Hanma tries to land a front kick but James steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
James slips under a jab from Hanma.
Rip James is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Hanma misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Hanma will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hanma lands a jab to James's midsection.
Hanma throws out a loose jab but James uses good head movement to avoid it.
Baki Hanma is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Hanma paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
James moves out of range of the strikes.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hanma is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by James.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Hanma here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
James looks to land a combination but Hanma avoids it well.
James shoots in for a takedown but Hanma shows good takedown defense.
Hanma misses the shot to the body.
James shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hanma pinned against the cage. Hanma gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hanma thows a left - swing and a miss!
James uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Hanma.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
James checks the leg kick nicely there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Baki Hanma dominated that second round.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


James staying out of range there.
A clash of legs there as James blocks the low kick.
Hanma throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
James misses with a double jab
and Hanma counters with a low kick, right behind James 's knee.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hanma throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

James slips under a jab from Hanma.
Hanma smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
James uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Hanma.
James has his takedown stuffed
enabling Hanma to counter with a crisp jab.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

and Hanma counters with an inside leg kick.
Hanma throws an overhand right that lands on James's shoulder, as James tries to avoid the shot.
James dodges the punch combination from Hanma.

Hanma stuffs the takedown attempt from James. James gets slowly back to his feet.
Hanma jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Good work by James as he checks the leg kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
James shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Hanma counters with a thumping low kick.
Baki Hanma has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rip James.
Some wild striking there from Hanma.
Hanma throws a left and a right that both miss

and James counters with a nice double leg into guard.

James drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Hanma dives on top into guard.

James is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but Baki Hanma did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it.

Hanma misses with a right hand

so James counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
James trying to control the position from guard on top but Hanma is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

James thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
James won't allow Hanma to sweep him here.

James wants to pass the guard but Hanma is keeping the position.

James is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
James is absolutely dripping with sweat - he looks exhausted.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
James misses with a takedown attempt
and Hanma counters with a straight right hand.
James misses with a takedown attempt
and Hanma counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Hanma works over James's head and body with a nice combination.

James shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hanma's guard.

James content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
James passes easily into side control. Nice work.
James advances nicely into full mount.
Hanma is squirming around, avoiding James's attempts to control the action.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
James is working for a guillotine from mount but Hanma frees his head quite easily. James landing strikes from the mount and Hanma is in trouble!

James has hold of Hanma's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Hanma manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
James wants to take Hanma's back but he can't do it this time.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

James is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by James!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:26 of round 4, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Rip James!
