PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bolo Zhan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Kuruts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Bolo Zhan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Alex Kuruts!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Radbod Blank and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zhan tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Kuruts counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Kuruts gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Kuruts content to control rather than advance.
It looks like Kuruts might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Alex Kuruts has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Kuruts closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kuruts lands in his opponent's guard.

Zhan escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kuruts gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Kuruts thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kuruts's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Zhan isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Kuruts stacks Zhan on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Kuruts!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Zhan bucks up and tries to throw Kuruts off but instead Kuruts has got his back!
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Zhan tries to break free.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kuruts has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Zhan's body.
Zhan wants to escape the position.
Kuruts trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Zhan doesn't escape.
You can see the frustration on Zhan's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Kuruts dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Kuruts ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Zhan moves away.
Zhan avoids the body shot from Kuruts.
Kuruts circles away from the clinch attempt

and Kuruts counters by moving into the clinch.

Kuruts has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Zhan uses from the top position.
Zhan has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Zhan looking to sit in guard and control but Kuruts gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Zhan is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Kuruts is aware though and is defending well.

Zhan is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Kuruts defends well.
Kuruts is stalling in the full guard.

Kuruts's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Zhan is looking for a triangle here but Kuruts uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kuruts takes a little break here. Zhan wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Kuruts tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Kuruts has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Kuruts happy to just control the position for now.
Alex Kuruts has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kuruts tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Zhan is looking to reverse the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Kuruts thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Zhan is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Kuruts is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Kuruts showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Kuruts closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Zhan quickly recovers to half guard.
Kuruts content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Zhan makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Zhan.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kuruts preventing the sweep.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Alex Kuruts hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Kuruts drives through with a takedown into Zhan's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Zhan will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Kuruts pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Zhan is keeping the position for now.
Kuruts controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Zhan has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Kuruts has passed into side control.

Kuruts controlling from side mount.
Kuruts throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Kuruts just content to control the position.
Zhan is trying to get back to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Zhan is trying to control Kuruts's posture but Kuruts avoids it.
The referee asks Kuruts politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Kuruts prefers to stall for the moment though.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Alex Kuruts wasn't active enough on the ground.
Zhan looks to clinch

and Kuruts counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Zhan trying to control the position but instead, Kuruts has worked for underhooks and has pushed Zhan into the cage.

Kuruts is trying to trip Zhan. He has hold of a leg but Zhan is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Kuruts persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kuruts content to stall in guard here.
Zhan is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Bolo Zhan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Zhan wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Kuruts is now in half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Alex Kuruts comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kuruts has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
