PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Deacon Griggs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chip Freedom (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Griggs comes into the arena with Church by T-Pain blaring out of the sound system. Freedom has chosen Star Spangled Banner as his entrance music. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 12 - 0, fighting out of New York, Deacon Griggs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 20 - 3, fighting out of New York, Chip Freedom!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, David Schapiro and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Freedom scores with a nice strike.
Freedom connects with a good right hand that stumbles Griggs. Griggs circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Freedom misses with a leg kick.
Griggs slips a straight right by Freedom.
Griggs is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Freedom.
Freedom throws a combination. Griggs tries to block but a couple of punches get through.


It looks like Deacon Griggs has been cut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Griggs drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Griggs is chipping away with strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Griggs working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Freedom really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Griggs. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Griggs cracks Freedom with a big right hand but Freedom just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Griggs tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Griggs has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Freedom defending against the ground and pound.
Griggs working away.
Freedom is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Griggs is controlling him well.
Griggs controls the position.
Griggs lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Griggs has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Griggs tries to advance to mount but Freedom denies him.
Freedom is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Griggs landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.

Griggs working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Griggs in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Griggs cracks Freedom with a big right hand but Freedom just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Griggs is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Freedom has escaped the position, nice work there.
Freedom wants to control but Griggs postures up.
Griggs lands some shots froms side control.

Griggs is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Freedom knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Griggs wants to lay and pray for a moment but Freedom keeps working.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Freedom is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Griggs's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Griggs looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Griggs is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Freedom!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Griggs has isolated one of Freedom's arms. Freedom looking to fight him off but Griggs twists into an armbar. It's tight... Will he tap?? YES, he's tapped! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Deacon Griggs!
An out of breath Deacon Griggs thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
