PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Angel Manuel Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Angel Manuel Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Anthony Pettis !
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Valeri Chadov and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pettis pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Cruz shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pettis napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Cruz tries for a kimura but Pettis is defending well.
Pettis stops Cruz from passing to mount.

Cruz decides to stand back up.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Pettis .
Pettis throws a sloppy head kick and Cruz moves out of range easily.
Pettis moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Pettis throws a jab when Cruz was well out of range.

Cruz gets a double leg takedown into Pettis 's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Pettis is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Cruz drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Pettis dives on top into guard.
Cruz is breathing heavily.

Cruz keeping moving, preventing Pettis from controlling successfully.

Pettis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Pettis drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pettis jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Cruz has his foot on Pettis 's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pettis works his way back into a safe position though.

Pettis passes Cruz's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Pettis is working for a kimura but Cruz is defending it quite comfortably.
Pettis wants to pass the guard but Cruz is defending well.
Cruz is pressing down on Pettis 's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Pettis throws a big elbow that misses.

Cruz utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Pettis wants to control from the top but Cruz keeps moving.
Pettis passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Pettis looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Pettis has knee on belly and moves into mount.

Pettis working for a guillotine from mount but Cruz is in no mood to give up.

Pettis jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Cruz manages to avoid the submission attempt.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pettis tries to advance to mount but can't.

Pettis tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pettis has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Pettis is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Cruz is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Anthony Pettis dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Pettis throws a head kick that misses.
Pettis goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Cruz clinches with his opponent.
Cruz struggles to land a body shot inside as Pettis controls his hands.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Cruz manages to break the clinch.

A big head kick from Pettis and Cruz is sent sprawling to the canvas!


Cruz is rocked!


It looks like Angel Manuel Cruz has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Pettis wants to pass the guard but Cruz is keeping the position.

Pettis drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Pettis seems to have locked his on tight now - Cruz screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Pettis , as he picks up the win!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). Anthony Pettis !
