The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alvarez tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smith paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Smith avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Scott Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Alvarez takes one on the button.
Alvarez is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Alvarez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. Smith gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Alvarez shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Smith lands a big uppercut and Alvarez crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Alvarez looks OK. Smith waves Alvarez back to his feet!

I'm just looking down at my notes here and I see that.... oh! Smith has cracked Alvarez with a big right, followed by a left! He's out on his feet! Smith lands another huge swinging hook and Alvarez tumbles to the canvas! The ref dives in to save Alvarez, before Smith can land any more shots!
