PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Austin Gabriel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leeroy Maltby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gabriel comes into the arena with I Am the Thorn by Cradle of Filth blaring out of the sound system. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Austin Gabriel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Leeroy Maltby!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Yves DeLean and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maltby tries to clinch but Gabriel is having none of it.
Gabriel shoots in but Maltby avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Nice combo by Maltby! Oh, that's hurt him - Gabriel falls to the canvas and Maltby follows him into side control.


It looks like Austin Gabriel has been cut.
Maltby wants to stand but Gabriel is controlling his arm.
Maltby really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gabriel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Maltby stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Gabriel closes the distance and clinches up with Maltby, looking for a takedown. Gabriel pushes Maltby against the cage but Maltby circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Gabriel darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gabriel prevents Maltby from standing back up.
Maltby is looking for a sweep. Gabriel is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Gabriel trying to control the action but Maltby is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Maltby wants to get back to his feet.
Gabriel seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Maltby does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Gabriel is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Maltby is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Maltby is trying to stand back up but Gabriel is controlling him

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Maltby doesn't manage to clinch there - Gabriel circles away.
Maltby tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gabriel swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Gabriel will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Austin Gabriel. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gabriel closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Maltby to the mat! Maltby manages to get full guard.
Gabriel is breathing heavily.
Maltby wants to sweep but no luck.
Maltby wants to stand and escape but Gabriel is having none of it.

Gabriel decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Maltby, up you get!

Gabriel shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Maltby pushes Gabriel off looking to stand but Gabriel dives back in and keeps control.

Gabriel is looking for a kimura but Maltby is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gabriel to get the leverage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Maltby pushes Gabriel off looking to stand but Gabriel dives back in and keeps control.
Maltby is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Gabriel is trying to work for a kimura but Maltby is defending well.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gabriel wants to work for an arm triangle but Maltby is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Gabriel seems to be looking for submissions.
Gabriel trying to pass the guard but Maltby defending well.
Maltby is trying to stand up here but Gabriel is controlling him well.

The fighters are battling for position here. Maltby manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Maltby is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Gabriel forces his way into half guard.

Gabriel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Maltby is just riding it out for now. Gabriel eventually gives up the hold.

Maltby kicks off Gabriel and gets to his feet.

Maltby keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Maltby listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.

Maltby has managed to clinch.
Maltby on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Gabriel is working for takedown but Maltby is calmly controlling the position for now.
Maltby unloads a knee to the mid-section. Gabriel lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Maltby comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

Maltby manages to break the clinch.
Gabriel tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Maltby swivels and escapes.
Maltby thows a body kick. Gabriel tries to catch it but that hurt him.

Maltby forces Gabriel back against the cage and clinches.
Gabriel misses with a knee to the head.
Maltby connects with a nasty looking knee right to Gabriel's face.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gabriel creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Gabriel has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Maltby avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Gabriel drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gabriel jumps guard but Maltby stands there with Gabriel around his waist. Gabriel gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Austin Gabriel will probably get the nod.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Maltby takes the fight into the clinch.
Gabriel wants a takedown but no success here.

Maltby breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gabriel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Maltby as he avoids it easily.

Maltby has closed the distance and engaged Gabriel in a clinch.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Maltby.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Gabriel looks to throw an elbow but misses.

Gabriel breaks from the clinch.

Maltby closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Gabriel tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Austin Gabriel. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Maltby lands an elbow just above Gabriel 's eye.

Maltby breaks the clinch.
Maltby wants to clinch up but Gabriel keeps it at a distance.
Gabriel takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Gabriel tries to clinch there but Maltby circles away.

Maltby misses with a few strikes there.
Maltby wants to clinch.

Maltby fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Gabriel, pushing him back against the cage.

Maltby wants the takedown. Gabriel is fighting it off but Maltby persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Gabriel's guard against the cage.
Gabriel looking for a sweep. Not yet Gabriel, not yet.
Maltby postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Maltby must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Gabriel manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Maltby manages to get himself to full guard.
Maltby keeping moving, preventing Gabriel from controlling successfully.

Maltby has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Gabriel off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Austin Gabriel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Gabriel shoots in for a takedown but Maltby shows good takedown defense.
Maltby throws a front kick that sends Gabriel stumbling back into the cage.

Maltby clinches.

Gabriel fails to pull guard.
Maltby trying to stall but Gabriel improves his position.
Gabriel throws an elbow that misses.
Maltby looking to throw knees to the head but Gabriel is blocking nicely.
Maltby gets underhooks to prevent Gabriel's takedown attempt.

Maltby breaks from the clinch.
Gabriel tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Maltby counters with a thumping low kick.
Gabriel fails to land the takedown.
Leeroy Maltby seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Maltby closes the distance and clinches.
Maltby prevents the takedown attempt.
Gabriel tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Maltby smiles and moves away.
A jab lands there for Maltby.
Both fighters circling a little - Maltby finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Maltby closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gabriel to the mat! Gabriel manages to get full guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Gabriel wants to sweep here but Maltby controlling him for the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gabriel is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Maltby slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Maltby is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Gabriel has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Maltby is looking to defend but Gabriel has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Maltby! Gabriel pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Maltby taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Austin Gabriel!
