PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ralph Vincent Gapuz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hank Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ralph Vincent Gapuz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hank Mir!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Frank Dennis and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gapuz throws a shot from downtown. Mir moves away and avoids it.

Mir gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Mir gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gapuz.
Gapuz is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Mir pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Gapuz gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Mir has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gapuz is working away from the top position though.
Mir gets full guard.
Mir is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Gapuz has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Gapuz trying to control the position from guard on top but Mir is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Gapuz is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Mir shoots in and drives through. Gapuz sprawls well.

Mir closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Mir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gapuz keeps working.
Mir might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Gapuz kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Mir passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Gapuz!
Gapuz is wriggling around trying to escape.
Gapuz tries to improve his position but instead Mir has taken his back!
Will Mir go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Mir has the hooks in. Gapuz is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Gapuz wants to get back to his feet.
The referee is taking a good look at Gapuz as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Mir!

Mir is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Gapuz has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Mir looks gassed!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gapuz tries to escape but Mir has the hooks in and won't let him break free.

Gapuz wants to control his opponent's hands but Mir gets his hands free.
Mir has the hooks in. Gapuz is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Gapuz rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Gapuz is staying active underneath Mir, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Gapuz makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Gapuz.

Gapuz working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mir doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mir manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Gapuz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mir stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gapuz swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gapuz manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Hank Mir dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Mir tries to close the distance and clinch up but Gapuz swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Hank Mir seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Mir feints and as Gapuz raises his hands in defense, Mir changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Gapuz looking for a sweep. Not yet Gapuz, not yet.
Gapuz is looking to sweep but instead, Mir has passed into half guard.
Gapuz is trying to get back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gapuz wants to control but Mir is keeping busy and won't allow it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Gapuz shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mir pinned against the cage. Mir gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

and Gapuz decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mir's guard.

Mir is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Gapuz knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mir on the ground.
Mir wants to sweep but no luck.
Mir is trying to control the position but Gapuz postures up.
Mir thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

Gapuz has gone for a leg lock! Mir slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gapuz's guard.

Mir wants to control from the top but Gapuz keeps moving.
Gapuz looking for a sweep. Not yet Gapuz, not yet.

Gapuz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mir gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Gapuz is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Mir misses with a takedown

and Gapuz counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Mir keeping moving, preventing Gapuz from controlling successfully.
Gapuz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mir swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Gapuz avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Gapuz tries to free his leg and advance position but Mir is retaining full guard.

Mir pushes Gapuz off and scrambles back to his feet.

Mir bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ralph Vincent Gapuz dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Mir tries to kick Gapuz off but Gapuz keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Gapuz seems to be working for a kimura but Mir defends the submission attempt.
Mir manages to get to full guard.

Mir looking for a sweep. Not yet Mir, not yet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Mir looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Ralph Vincent Gapuz overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Gapuz thows a big elbow that misses.
Gapuz in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Gapuz is looking to advance position but Mir has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mir doesn't have the hooks in and Gapuz manages to turn into his guard.
Gapuz wants to pass the guard but Mir is keeping the position.
Gapuz postures up in Mir's guard and throws a big left but Mir blocks it.
Mir can't keep his opponent in guard - Gapuz advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Mir throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Gapuz is working for a submission of some sort.
Mir wants to control but Gapuz is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gapuz wants to free his trapped foot but Mir is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Mir is not content to let Gapuz control the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Gapuz looks for a takedown but Mir sprawls well.
Horrible takedown by Gapuz or perhaps it was just good defense by Mir which made him look bad.
Mir swats away the attempt to clinch by Gapuz.
Mir misses with a double jab.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Gapuz shoots in for a takedown but Mir shows good takedown defense.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ralph Vincent Gapuz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gapuz misses with a takedown attempt - Mir sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Mir has closed the distance and engaged Gapuz in a clinch.

Mir successfully pulls guard.
