PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mamed Skursyniev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Blok (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Blok has chosen Castle of Glass as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Michael Blok is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mamed Skursyniev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Michael Blok!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Valeri Chadov and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Skursyniev misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Blok darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Skursyniev wants to control but Blok passes into side.
Blok tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Blok is trying to get an arm triangle but Skursyniev is defending well.

Blok tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Blok has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Blok working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Skursyniev is looking to reverse the position.

Skursyniev wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Blok scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Skursyniev to see if he's OK.
Blok connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Skursyniev some visible discomfort.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Blok wants to stand but Skursyniev has his arm trapped.

Blok is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Skursyniev knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Blok is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Skursyniev has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Blok looking to control but Skursyniev is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Blok with shots to the head and body - Skursyniev looks very uncomfortable down there.
Skursyniev is working to get back to half guard.
Skursyniev knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Blok on the ground.
Blok has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Skursyniev's face.
Skursyniev wants to hold on but Blok pushes him away.
Skursyniev is breathing heavily.

Blok working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Skursyniev wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Blok gets a double leg takedown into Skursyniev's guard.
Blok content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Blok postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Blok trying to control the position from guard on top but Skursyniev is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Blok is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Skursyniev tries to clinch up.
Blok has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Skursyniev fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Blok has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Skursyniev throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

No luck for Skursyniev with that takedown attempt.
Skursyniev shoots in for a takedown but Blok shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Blok has closed the distance and engaged Skursyniev in a clinch.
Skursyniev is trying to pull guard but Blok turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mamed Skursyniev. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Michael Blok has got the better of the ground game so far.
Blok stays in close to Skursyniev's body and controls the position.
Blok distracts Skursyniev with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Blok drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Blok jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Skursyniev is trying to keep Blok in close.
Blok wants to get up but he can't break Skursyniev's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Michael Blok was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Blok rushes Skursyniev and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Blok takes a knee to the side of the body.
Blok is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Blok prevents a takedown attempt there.

Skursyniev tightens his grip and picks Blok up, before dumping him to the ground. Blok manages to land in guard.
Skursyniev being controlled here momentarily.
Skursyniev looking to sit in guard and control but Blok gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Blok trying to stand up but can't free himself from Skursyniev's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Blok postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Michael Blok showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Blok throws a front kick aimed at Skursyniev's knee but Skursyniev avoids it well.
Blok throws the kick towards the body but Skursyniev avoids it.
Mamed Skursyniev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Skursyniev moves into the clinch successfully.
Skursyniev has had enough of the clinch but Blok keeps him there for the moment.

Blok breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Blok looking to score a takedown here. Skursyniev is defending well but Blok drives through and ends up in Skursyniev's guard.

Skursyniev looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Blok is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Blok sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Blok cracks Skursyniev with a solid left hand.
Blok connects with a couple of short punches.
Skursyniev wants to stand up but Blok is controlling him.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Blok's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Blok slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Skursyniev is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Skursyniev being controlled here, momentarily.
Skursyniev controls Blok momentarily but Blok frees himself.
Blok is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Michael Blok hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Blok darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Blok slips a nice elbow through Skursyniev's hands, connecting with Skursyniev's forehead.
Blok with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Blok scoring with strikes to the body and head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Blok is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Skursyniev is wriggling around trying to escape.
Blok with a couple of short strikes.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Blok lands a nice shot to the head.
Skursyniev is looking to get to half guard.

Blok looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Blok lands a big shot there that rocks Skursyniev but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
Michael Blok comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Blok winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Michael Blok opened up his post fight interview with a scream to camera that he wants a title shot! Whether he deserves the shot will be up to the management of the organization, so I guess he'll have to wait and see.
