PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alex Viliam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rudi Mentaire (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alex Viliam!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rudi Mentaire!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Tiny Johnson and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Viliam lands a nice looking body shot.
Mentaire fails to land with a series of punches.
Mentaire wants to clinch
and Viliam counters with a series of strikes. Mentaire will be more careful next time no doubt.
Viliam lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Viliam throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Mentaire shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Mentaire is trying to control. Viliam wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Mentaire is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Viliam is just riding it out for now. Mentaire eventually gives up the hold.
Viliam is looking to control Mentaire's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Viliam avoid being mounted?

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mentaire thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Mentaire frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Mentaire wants to stand but Viliam is holding on to him, trying to stop him posturing up.

Mentaire tries to control but Viliam wriggling away.

Mentaire swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Viliam is now in Mentaire's guard. A big mistake from Mentaire there, giving up the dominant position!

Mentaire not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Mentaire is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Rudi Mentaire wasn't active enough on the ground.

Viliam throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Mentaire on the side of the head.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Viliam has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mentaire is working away from the top position though.

Viliam fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Mentaire to the ground. Viliam is now in Mentaire's guard.
Viliam wants to pass the guard but Mentaire is keeping the position.
Mentaire controls Viliam momentarily but Viliam frees himself.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mentaire can do anything to dispel that myth.

Mentaire bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Viliam's guard.

Mentaire with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Viliam to score with a decent uppercut.

Viliam paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Mentaire takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Viliam seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Alex Viliam.
